A former McDonald's manager who faked a cancer diagnosis cut his embezzlement trial short this week, opting before testimony was finished to instead plead no contest to pocketing $67,000 in deposits.
Authorities said Germaine Leopold Hodge, 33, abruptly resigned from the Loop 1604 and Babcock Road restaurant, presenting a doctor's note, after an investigation was launched in May 2010. A closer look at the note, however, showed it to have the forged signature of a gynecologist, court documents state.
Hodge, a native of the Virgin Islands and considered a flight risk, was arrested a short time later.
Under terms of the plea agreement, Hodge will receive a seven-year sentence for misapplication of fiduciary property. But it will be up to state District Judge Melisa Skinner to decide in May if the term will be served in prison or on probation.
