Yale University President Richard Levin will step down at the end of the academic year after 20 years at the helm of the Ivy League school.
Levin, 65, has been Yale's president since 1993 and has served at the New Haven university longer than any other current Ivy League president, noted Reuters. As president, he oversaw Yale's largest building and renovation program since the 1930s and started the expansion of the university's financial aid programs.

"It is a source of great satisfaction to leave Yale in much stronger condition ? academically, physically, and financially ? than it was when I began in 1993," Levin said, according to Reuters.
Yale is expected to undertake a nationwide search for a successor, who will take the helm of the $3 billion-a-year operating budget university next summer, reported The New York Times. Levin said he simply felt it was time to move on and that he planned to take a one-year sabbatical to write a book.
"Rick Levin is simply one of the world's great leaders," Yale trustee Indra Nooyi, chief executive of PepsiCo, said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. "He has been transformational in envisioning how a university should be a leading citizen in its home community and he has boldly staked out how the leading universities should become global institutions. His example has been a guide for how universities around the world can have a much greater impact."
I?m just not a good enough human being to have people in my life. I am, amongst other things; selfish, ungrateful, narcissistic, uncaring, weak, worthless, grotesque, uncompassionate and evil. My voice inflicts pain on everyone I talk to. My body makes people want to vomit. My mind is that of a repulsive freak that brings pain and terror to people?s lives.
Or at least this is what my abuser convinced myself, and others, was the reason I should live an isolated life.
The real reason that I have no friends is slightly more complicated.
I suffer from social anxiety disorder; arguably the least understood anxiety disorder.
?Social anxiety is the fear of social situations and the interaction with other people that can automatically bring on feelings of self-consciousness, judgment, evaluation, and inferiority.
Put another way, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression.?

The most common feature of social anxiety is a constant, intense anxiety that does not go away. An anxiety that manifests itself physiologically with symptoms including: intense fear, racing heart, turning red or blushing, excessive sweating, dry throat and mouth, trembling, swallowing with difficulty, and muscle twitches.
Like most people who suffer from anxiety disorders, someone suffering from social anxiety knows their anxiety is irrational. But knowing something is very different from believing it. Deep in my heart I know I?m none of the things my abuser called me, but her relentless, repetitive abuse made me believe that everything I listed above is who I am. Her words persist in my mind regardless of what I do to counteract them, in much the same way that social anxiety persists, despite facing the fears on a daily basis.
There are seven situations in which someone suffering from social anxiety will experience significant emotional distress. I have, throughout my life, experienced each of these on multiple occasions ? each leading to a reduced level of functioning, especially in the arena of building friendships and relationships.
1. Being introduced to other people
Any childhood memories of being introduced to new people have dissolved into the sands of time, but when I was a teenager ? when meeting new people is a prerequisite to be accepted ? it was immensely difficult for me. When I joined my new school after moving from Scotland to Wales it took me a long time to start talking to people, with the difficulty increasing to the point of avoidance after my mental health issues took hold.
A similar situation arose when I began backpacking in 1999, with many evenings spent quietly observing the other residents of the hostel, both envious of their ability to engage and angry at my own insecurities. Only when they started talking to me did I begin to communicate, for as with every friend and relationship I?ve ever had, I?ve never had enough control of my anxiety to make the first move.
As with many areas of social anxiety, this inability to communicate often translates to those who don?t understand as a form of snobbish behavior, with many people deciding I thought myself ?too good? to be talking to such ?peasants? ? when in reality it?s the exact opposite. My anxiety drives me to believe I?m not good enough as a person to be around such vibrant, wonderful individuals.
All throughout my life ? being introduced to Louise?s friends upon arriving in Australia, various parties attended throughout those years, having to meet new contacts or prospective employees in various jobs, joining social networking sites in the hope to make new friends, contacting organisations to assist in mental health and/or homelessness issues ? whenever there is the threat or reality of meeting new people I withdraw into my shell like a terrified turtle.
2. Being teased or criticized
Ever since being bullied at school, which I believe to be a fundamental cause of my anxiety, this is my second biggest fear in the world. I know only too well that words can hurt ? at times, far more than sticks and stones.
Although it is something we all fear ? being social creatures, we want people to like us ? this becomes a major issue when someone actively avoids communication over fear of the perceived inevitable criticism. With this in mind, it shouldn?t be too difficult to realize how it can affect building friendships and relationships.
Unfortunately, as has been written many times in the past, just as I was beginning to get a handle on this irrational fear and open up to both friends and strangers, I ended up in an emotionally abusive relationship.
And that is the worst thing that can happen to someone with social anxiety disorder!
3. Being the center of attention
Given that I?m a rather pointless human being who has achieved virtually nothing of note this has never been a huge issue for me. The thought of being the center of attention scares me to the point that I tend to deflect, play down or hide my achievements.
For example:
One of my few moments of pride was the work I produced managing a backpacker hostel many years ago. Although my abuser erased that pride with numerous vicious comments regarding this period (and what I believed to be achievements) I?ve always remembered being the center of attention at my leaving BBQ and the increasing panic that grew in the lead up to my inevitable speech. My words became muddled, my mouth dried and I made myself look like a twat in front of management and staff.
Also, when I had my short story and opinion piece published in 2009 I wrote both under a pseudonym and sent copies to only one person. I never told anyone else for fear of, momentarily, being the center of attention.
4. Being watched while doing something
My first girlfriend became increasingly frustrated that I?d never write when she was around. She thought I was being elusive and hiding something sinister, where in actual fact, I just can?t write when people are watching me.
The same goes for other areas of my life. I wrote recently of how my fear of being watched on stage ultimately led to me turning down Theatre at A-Level. When I was at a college, I would often head to the darkroom outside of hours as I functioned much better when alone. Even work I undertook at the hostel was easier when people weren?t watching me.
The downside to this is that it leads to all sorts of problems when trying to form relationships. Such behavior makes me appear to be a weird loner, secretive, unable to work as part of a team, and untrustworthy ? whereas in reality, the opposite applies.
5. Meeting people in authority (?important people?)
Meeting or being in situations involving important people are guaranteed to freak me out. The usual suspects apply:
Police: although I have never committed a crime nor been arrested in any way shape or form. Judiciary: again, despite never having encountered them, anyone associated with the law freaks me out. Management: I will explore this in more detail in a later entry to the series. David Tennant: never met him ? would probably pass out if I did!
But in my mind, there are others:
Librarians: being the guardians of knowledge, librarians have always been intimidating and prone to cause me anxiety. Academics: a recent comment on The Conversation stated that an interview from an academic was less ferocious than an interview from a journalist. Personally, I would choose an interview from a journalist any day of the year, as I fear whip-smart academics far more than journalists! Psychiatrists: Arg! Why can?t they just understand I get tongue-tied and confused because I?m being placed in a vulnerable, potentially humiliating situation? If they did, I might not be insane as I am! Doctors: see psychiatrists above! Dentists: ditto. Editors: perhaps because my grasp of grammar would most likely cause even the most kind-natured of editors to spank and send me to the naughty corner, perhaps because I simply envy them, editors are the supreme authority figure to this aspiring writer and therefore?runaway!
6. Most social encounters, especially with strangers
When most people think of social encounters they think of parties, or meeting up with friends, few take it the next logical step to be any encounter where social interaction may occur.
There have been times in my life where I have deliberately starved myself rather than walk to the supermarket to buy food.
One time, whilst homeless, I saved for months to secure a motel room but, because I couldn?t bear speaking to the receptionist on that particular day, lost my money by simply not arriving.
As for pre-arranged social encounters, nothing compares to the anxiety surrounding these. If I go I usually end up being so anxious I can?t tell the difference between a Bordeaux and a Claret and spend the entire evening saying nothing but the occasional, incoherent, gargle. If I don?t go, it?s because the anxiety has become so severe I suffer a crippling panic attack and spend the evening flagellating myself for being so weak and worthless. Either way, the chances of meeting new people, are non-existent.
7. Going around the room (or table) in a circle and having to say something
I hated this at school. I hated it at work experience. I hated it at training seminars. I hated it at first aid classes. I hated it at college. I don?t think I will ever not hate it.
When I had to do it at school I?d become tongue-tied and confused; the resulting mumble, oft ridiculed for months afterwards. At work experience (at the age of 15) I was so nervous I admitted ? long before Eccleston, Tennant and Smith made the show must-see television ? that I was a Doctor Who fan; the laughter still haunts me to this day.
By the time I began training seminars I hated this moment so much I would ?accidentally? miss my train or ?accidentally? get a flat tyre purely to arrive late and avoid this cruel hell. Ditto for first aid classes.
As for college, I tried for days to talk to my girlfriend about my fear of this moment in the hope I would receive some understanding, but whenever I did she attacked, knocking my self-esteem so much that on the first night I fumbled my way through my introduction, mixed the names of my favourite film directors (annoyingly, David Fincher and David Mackenzie became Fincher Mackenzie and David David) and accidentally told the class my name was Mitchell. I still don?t know where that came from!
In a world where first impressions are the only thing that matters, fudging this moment immediately puts me on the back foot. Rather than making an impression that creates ?I want to get to know this guy? feelings it becomes the other way around.
This, for the most part, is the story of my life.
No matter what effort I make to overcome this aspect of my life I never seem to be able to get a proper handle on it. It is possible to overcome social anxiety disorder ? as I mentioned, I would have got there had it not been for an abusive relationship ? but the surest way of doing so is through cognitive behavioral therapy.
Unfortunately I?ve never been able to access this particular holy grail of anxiety therapy. My aversion to psychiatrists (I have yet to meet one who seems to grasp the impact this anxiety has on me) means I am left fighting this without support; my anxiety too severe and my life too isolated to navigate the system to obtain effective treatment.
This isn?t to say I?ve given up.
However hopeless and difficult social anxiety may be ? it is beatable!

ESSINGTON, Pa. (AP) ? Rapper Beanie Sigel was arrested Wednesday on weapon and drug violations during a traffic stop, just two weeks before he is scheduled to report to prison for failing to file taxes, state police said.
The 38-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was a passenger in a car pulled over on Interstate 95 in Tinicum Township, just south of his hometown of Philadelphia.
Police said they found a gun in the car's console. Both Sigel and driver Gerald Andrews are felons banned from having such weapons, according to troopers.
Andrews was also carrying several prescription bottles and a small amount of marijuana, police said. Sigel had more than $4,600 in cash, plus prescription pills and a bottle of codeine syrup, according to troopers.
Court records indicate Sigel and Andrews both face drug and gun charges and were unable to post bail. Sigel's lawyer declined to comment immediately, saying he had not yet reviewed the case. It was not clear if Andrews had an attorney.
Sigel's latest album, called "This Time," was released on Tuesday by Ruffhouse Records.
Chris Schwartz, the label's chief executive, said in a statement that the company is disappointed in Sigel's arrest. But he added that the rapper has displayed "the utmost professionalism in all of the initiatives related to the promotion of his new release."
"Beanie has obviously been struggling with some personal issues, and we continue to support him now and throughout his impending incarceration," Schwartz said.
Sigel is scheduled to begin a two-year prison sentence on Sept. 12 for failing to pay federal taxes. Prosecutors said he owes more than $700,000 for the tax years 1999 through 2005.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? During what may be the most important week of Mitt Romney's political career, the Republican presidential contender's five sons are sharing family secrets like never before.
They are calling their father "cheap" on national television. They're spilling stories about plane-sick children. And when the cameras are not rolling, they are raising money and giving emotional support to the man who raised them but may need their help now more than ever.
The Romney boys are not exactly boys anymore. They range in age from 31 to 42, with 18 grandchildren between them. And during the week that the nation tunes into the Republican National Convention, the unofficial starting line for the 70-day sprint to Election Day, the Romney sons want America to know their father like they do.
"We will do anything that the campaign asks us to," Romney's eldest son, Tagg, said Tuesday in an interview with The Associated Press.
In total, the Romney sons have done about 100 individual media interviews this week. It's an all-out media blitz featuring group interviews with late-night comedians, television network anchors and just about everyone with a camera or tape recorder in between. They tell the story of a practical-joking father, an affectionate husband and a supportive grandfather. It's a side of the sometimes-wooden Republican businessman that many voters have never seen.
And, as voters decide which man they will invite into their living rooms for the next four years, Romney's sons are showcasing a side of the candidate his advisers want the country to know better. His campaign knows Romney is facing an opponent, in President Barack Obama, who remains personally popular despite the nation's struggling economy. And that could be a key factor in a close election.
"For voters who take voting for president very personally, (Romney's sons) offer an expansive window into who he is and what makes him tick," said Romney aide Kevin Madden. "This is a person that's really taught them values, taught them a lot of life lessons. And I think that's important for a lot of voters. They don't always get to see that."
Indeed, voters were not with Romney on his Tuesday flight from Boston to Tampa on Tuesday, when his 8-year-old grandson was sick a few seats behind him. They did not see a messy-haired grandfather climb out of bed to hold a 3-month-old crying baby at his New Hampshire summer home last week. Nor were they inside Romney's convention hotel room Tuesday afternoon when the 65-year-old father privately reflected on "the largeness of the moment" with Tagg, Tagg's wife and two sons.
"This is a week where we're telling the story about who my dad is and what he believes in," Tagg said after sharing the personal moments. "We probably know him better than anybody else."
A candidate's family usually plays an outsized role in the party's national conventions. And heading into this convention week, Romney's staff had planned to use the time in Tampa to play up his life story following a summer filled with a barrage of TV ads ? courtesy of Obama and his allies ? that cast Romney as a ruthless and out-of-touch businessman.
Romney will be surrounded by family before and after his Thursday night speech. His wife, Ann, played her biggest role yet Tuesday night, offering a prime-time speech of her own focused on family.
"I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a storybook marriage," she told the convention. "Well, in the storybooks I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once."
All five Romney sons ? Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben and Craig ? watched their mother speak from the convention hall. Tall and photogenic, each married in his 20s and all have wives who are stay-at-home moms. Three of the sons work in real estate, one is in private equity and the fifth is finishing his medical residency.
To hear them tell it, Mitt Romney was a consistently engaged father, regularly talking to his boys about career choices. The sons acknowledge that Tagg probably felt the most pressure to follow in his father's footsteps, and he has, attending Harvard Business School and founding a private equity firm.
All five boys attended the prestigious all-boys Belmont Hill School outside Boston, where they were required to play three sports. And all five went to Brigham Young University, the Mormon college in Utah where three met their wives. The three oldest went on to Harvard Business School. Ben went to Tufts Medical School, and Craig has a graduate degree from Columbia.
But they share their mother's down-to-earth appeal.
Asked to describe their father in one word during a recent Fox interview, Josh called him "cheap." Craig suggested "qualified," while Ben quipped "frugal." Matt cited "integrity" and Tagg said "generous."
But do not be fooled. In addition to sharing family stories, Tagg has been a part of his father's political brain trust since his first presidential bid. And all of the sons help their father raise money across the country. Tagg focuses on the East Coast, while the others focus on the West Coast.
Tagg alone has roughly 20 fundraisers scheduled before the November election.
It's a grind for some as they balance family and professional responsibilities. But it's something they say is worth it.
"This is an incredible privilege to be doing this. You don't want to complain," Tagg said. "This is an unbelievable experience for a family."

Under Article 1 of Law Number 20 of 1961 on Revocation of Rights of Land and/or Objects Over the Land (?Law No.20/1961?), President in an urgent circumstance after hearing the Minister of Agrarian Affairs, Minister of Justice and the related Minister may revoke the rights of land and/or objects over the land. Revocation of rights of land and objects over the land can be performed if the land and/or objects over the land are needed for public interest, including the nation?s interests and the common interests of the people, as well as for development purposes.
Submission of the Request of Revocation of Rights of Land
Under Article 2 of Law No.20/1961, the request of revocation of rights of land and/or objects over the land is proposed by an interested party to the President with the intercession of the Minister of Agrarian Affairs (now the Head of the National Land Agency of the Republic of Indonesia), through the Head of Inspection Agrarian (now the Local Office of Provincial National Land Agency). The request is accompanied with:
land-use plan and the reasons;
information about the owner of the rights, and location of the land, size of the land, and the type of right of land that will be revoked;
shelter plan for the party whose rights will be revoked.
The Process of Revocation of Rights of Land
After receiving the submission of request for revocation of rights of land, the Local Office of Provincial National Land Agency asks for the consideration of Local Government?s Head to give its consideration about the request of revocation of rights of land. However, the Local Office of Provincial National Land Agency also asks for the consideration of the appraiser committee to estimate the compensation costs.
Within a period not later than 3 (three) months, the Local Government?s Head should have submitted its consideration and the appraiser committee has to tell the estimation of the compensation costs to the Local Office of Provincial National Land Agency. After obtaining the consideration and estimation of the compensation costs, the Local Office of Provincial National Land Agency submits the request for revocation of rights of land to the Head of the National Land Agency of the Republic of Indonesia.
If within 3 (three) months the Local Government?s Head and appraiser committee has not submitted its consideration, the Local Office of Provincial National Land Agency may submit the request for revocation of rights of land to the head of the National Land Agency of the Republic of Indonesia, without waiting for the consideration from the Local Government?s Head and appraiser committee.
Head of National Land Agency of the Republic of Indonesia submits the request for revocation of rights of land to the President accompanied with the consideration of Minister of Justice and the related Minister. Submission of revocation of rights of land must be implemented to obtain the President?s decision regarding the revocation of rights of land.
Revocation of Rights of Land in an Urgent Circumstances
Under Article 6 of the Law No.20/1961, it regulates that in urgent circumstances, the Local Office of Provincial National Land Agency, after receiving a request for revocation of rights of land, can directly propose the request of revocation of rights of land to the Head of the National Land Agency of the Republic of Indonesia without the consideration of Local Government?s Head and the estimation of the compensation from appraiser committee.
Based on the request, the Head of National Land Agency of the Republic of Indonesia issued a decision letter that provides permission for the interested party to control the land and the object over the land. The decision letter will be followed by presidential decision on the request of revocation of rights of land to be granted or rejected. If the request is rejected, the interested party has to return the land and/or related object to its original condition, and/or give equivalent compensation to the owner of the rights of land.
Decree of the Head of National Land Agency of the Republic of Indonesia on the revocation of rights of land is published in the State Gazette of the Republic of Indonesia and its derivatives will be given to the owner of rights of land and/or objects whose rights were revoked. The content of the decision letter also be announced through the newspapers. The cost of the announcement is carried out by the interested party.
Compensation
Under Article 8 of Law No.20/1961, if the owner of the rights of land whose land will be revoked does not accept compensation because the amount of the compensation is considered less, then he can propose for appeal to the High Court that jurisdiction covers the location of the land and/or related object. The court will determine the amount of compensation.
After the decision letter of the revocation of rights of land is implemented and the compensation is paid, then the land which right of land is revoked is directly controlled by the state.
