Resolution on sharing family history ? more 'kindling,' less 'swamping'

Any genealogist will tell you that one of the most rewarding things that can happen is for one of your family members to show an interest in your shared ancestry.

Before my niece, Stephanie Taylor, married Andrew Zimmerman, she told me that she would like to have as a wedding gift a one-page pedigree chart for each of them that could be framed and hung on their wall.

I was so touched to have her make this request, and arranged to have the framed charts compiled, wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree this year at my sister?s house to surprise the young couple.

Did I mention that Stephanie and Andy were married in October? That?s October ? last year.

Now that I?ve done the project, framed it and actually given it to the young couple, you can guess what my message for the new year is about sharing family history:

Don?t wait.

Whether your genealogy is in a computer or handwritten on sheets of paper, it?s not a big deal to make copies and put them in a simple three-ring binder for the intended relative. This makes updating easy because you can just give out updated pages as they are ready.

But don?t overlook the value ? and fun ? in sharing just a page of your pedigree.

In my early days of genealogical research, I often overwhelmed my dad and other relatives by trying to communicate everything I?d found about the family all at once.

What works better, of course, is sharing information on your heritage in manageable bites. My uncle Roddy Moore once asked for information on our Bennetts, as he and my dad and their siblings were very close to their Bennett grandparents, who were in fact, both Bennetts. I focused on what he wanted to know.

What I realized while doing the recent project for my niece is that a one-page pedigree chart, even if it reaches back only three generations, can represent a good amount of heritage. Moreover, confining the information to one page communicates in a simple way that can be understood.

The pedigree chart for my niece encompasses all eight of her great-grandparents ? Taylor, Willis, Marble, Osberg, Moore, Bennett, Steeves and Roberts. The Osbergs were from Sweden, and the early Steeves ancestors from Wurtemburg, Germany.

Her husband?s great-grandparents have surnames Zimmerman, Andrews, Atkinson, Soper, Higgins, Farmer, Hanson and Strout. Zimmerman is a German name. (Broadway and film star Ethel Merman was born Ethel Agnes Zimmerman.)

I printed off the pedigree charts on my Family Treemaker program and framed them. I also printed off an extra copy of each one for Stephanie and Andy?s parents: Scott and Maureen (Moore) Taylor and Ralph and Joyce (Higgins) Zimmerman.

When I find new information to add to the charts, or if Stephanie and Andy learn new things from their families, I can easily print off updated charts for them to use to replace the ones hanging on their wall.

Now that I?ve completed these first one-page projects, I can think of other relatives who would appreciate having the same thing for their home, even one family that already has a notebook I did with several charts in it.

After 35 years of research, all it took was one special niece to help me think in terms of kindling the family?s interest in genealogy, rather than swamping them with information.

Thanks, Stephanie Taylor Zimmerman.

The national anthem is a difficult song to sing, requiring a range of voice I would never expect in youngsters.

So it is a pleasure to offer an ?A-plus? to three young ladies, approximately the age of fifth-graders, who gave their best during the Veterans Day dedication of the Bangor World War II Memorial at Cole Land Transportation Museum.

Emily Mock, Rachael Kiah and Ceci Doering stood up on the bench where they had been sitting and treated some 200 in attendance to one wonderful performance of ?The Star-Spangled Banner.?

It was more than a treat ? it was a blessing. It also was a worthy tribute to the memory of 112 Bangor veterans killed during World War II.

Craigslist Sock Model Wanted: The Weirdest (And Grossest) Ad Of The Year?

Um, ew.

Our friends over at Hayeswire have stumbled upon perhaps the weirdest (and grossest) wanted ad of the year: a Male Sock Model.

Doesn't seem quite so disgusting at first glance, but the solicitor specifies that she requires the socks "to be ripe and sweaty."

He or she also mentions that the model must "like to get their socks/feet worshipped" and "needs to be okay with another dude smelling your socks."

We've seen a lot of bizarre things here in our fair city, but we can confidently say we wouldn't want to be a fly on the wall for whatever goes down during this encounter.

Foot fetish enthusiasts can take a look at the full ad here.

Women to compete in Las Vegas for Miss Universe

(AP) ? Women from around the world are preparing to don evening gowns, show their interview skills and strut in swimsuits on Wednesday in hopes of becoming the next Miss Universe.

Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola will crown her successor during the competition featuring 89 contestants at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The panel of 10 judges includes singer Cee Lo Green, Pablo Sandoval of the World Series champion Giants, "Iron Chef" star Masaharu Morimoto, and U.S. Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings.

The 61st annual Miss Universe show will also feature performances by the band Train and Australian singer Timomatic.

The Miss Universe Organization is co-owned by NBC and Donald Trump. The pageant is returning to Las Vegas after being held in Sao Paulo last year.

Andy Cohen and Giuliana Rancic are returning to host.

The group of contestants from six continents was expected to be cut to 16 soon after the start of the show based on preliminary competitions.

Organizers had considered holding the contest in the popular Dominican Republic tourist city of Punta Cana, but Miss Universe Organization president Paula Shugart said that country's financial crisis proved to be too much of an obstacle.

The diverse group of contestants spent the past two weeks in Las Vegas, where they posed in hardhats at a hotel ground-breaking, took a painting lesson, and pranked hotel guests by hiding in their rooms.

On the eve of the pageant, the Miss Universe Organization announced it had won a defamation suit against a woman who claimed this year's Miss USA contest, also owned by Trump, was fixed.

The winner of the Miss USA crown goes on to represent her country in the Miss Universe contest.

Contestants cannot have been married or have children. They must be younger than 27 and older than 18 by Feb. 1 of the competition year.

The pageant started as a local revue in Long Beach, Calif., organized by Catalina Swimwear. It is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant.

Ricky Gervais in Talks for Muppets Sequel

We've known for a while now that Jason Segel would not be returning to The Muppets, a franchise he helped resurrect on the big screen. And that's not a bad-blood thing, either. Segel was thrilled that his crusade to bring The Muppets back to relevancy finally paid off, it was just never his plan to turn The Muppets into his own franchise. Disney thinks Kermit and friends still need a lead human counterpart, though, and they've apparently found one in a very unlikely place: Ricky Gervais.

That's right. The brash, British comedian who revels in controversy is reportedly in talks to be the two-legged anchor for the untitled Muppets sequel. And if that makes you shake your head at The Muppets, well, that's understandable. Gervais is by his own engineering a divisive personality, but just because he can make famous people feel horrible, doesn't mean he's a horrible person himself.

He's actually written a series of children's books called Flanimals, which have also been optioned for the big screen, so he's certainly got a soft side. And while some may not like his style of comedy, he's actually a very good actor. Just look at the end of the?Extras Christmas Special for an example of that. Warning, it does have some NSFW language in it, but the performance and sentiment are fantastic.

And, at the end of the day, director James Bobin and writer Nicholas Stoller are returning, anyway, so it's not like Gervais will be hijacking the ship. We're sure the Muppets gang?is still in safe hands, but what do you think?
