Libya attack: GOP goes after the White House, especially Susan Rice

Questions about how the Obama administration has handled the attack in Libya that killed the US ambassador on Sept. 11 have taken a harder political edge. Some Republicans say UN Ambassador Susan Rice should resign over faulty reporting of the attack.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says it?s a scandal worse than Watergate ? that the American people ?have flat-out been lied too,? as he put it on Fox News Friday.

Eric Fehrenstrom, a senior adviser to Mitt Romney?s campaign (also speaking on Fox News), says, ?President Obama needs?to be held accountable for his?administration's attempts to?mislead the American people?about what happened in?Benghazi.?

Rep. Peter King, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, has called for the resignation of United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice.

Blasphemy riots: 6 examples around the world

The broader theme here (and in many other partisan and conservative blog comments) is that President Obama wasn?t just unaware of the threat in Libya and its violent outcome, but that he and his administration were purposely untruthful about what happened.

The headline on Karl Rove?s column in the Wall Street Journal this week was ?Obama's Biggest Opponent Is the Truth.?

?Every day, it seems, he attempts to disqualify his opponent through deliberate and undeniable falsehoods,? Mr. Rove wrote. ?This is only one side of a two-sided coin. The president can't tell the truth about his own record either.?

In predicting what he?ll be dealing with in his upcoming debates with Obama, Mr. Romney himself told ?Good Morning America? earlier this month, "I think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate."

The essence of the charge about Libya by Republicans is that the administration purposely tried to downplay the incident by asserting that the attack was spontaneous, prompted by riots tied to the anti-Islam YouTube video that set off protests in Egypt, Libya, and many other Muslim countries across North Africa and the Middle East.

In the days following the attack, Ambassador Rice (and others in the administration) left the impression that the attackers took advantage of the riot to quickly gather weapons and target the relatively defenseless consulate.

Only later did administration officials, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, acknowledge that ?terrorists? ? some with possible ties (or at least supported by) Al Qaeda ? likely were involved.

Tiny medical electronics dissolve harmlessly inside your body

20 hrs.

A team of researchers has created a form of electronics that can be implanted in a patient's body then forgotten about ? because the implants will dissolve within a week or two. Such safe and hassle-free electronic monitoring could revolutionize medical care.

Implanting devices in the body is nothing new, but usually the risk is only worth it for life-threatening problems: a pacemaker, for instance, or an insulin pump. But there are lots of?situations where constantly monitoring some vital statistic would be useful. A thermometer or blood sugar monitor could help make sure a post-operative patient is safe during the critical first week ? but the stress and cost of the implantation and removal operations can't be justified.

But what if the implant was inexpensive and made of nontoxic materials that would break apart and be resorbed into the body after a set period of time? That's just what researchers, led by Professor?Fiorenzo Omenetto at Tufts and?John A. Rogers at the University of Illinois, have accomplished.

The tiny devices, which they call "transient electronics," are made from silicon and silk. Silicon is, of course, a?normal material for electronics, but it is also a common organic element found in our own bodies, and small amounts of silicon are easily dissolved in water or bodily fluids. Modern manufacturing techniques allowed the team to make silicon circuits only tens of nanometers thick, meaning they are well within healthy quantities?to be ingested.

Circuits are usually mounted on plastic or some other non-soluble material. But on transient electronics, the circuit?board is made of silk protein extracted from silkworm cocoons, a material that is strong but also very biodegradable. Omenetto and his team managed to adjust its properties so they can control how long it takes for the silk to degrade ? meaning they can create devices that melt down after a day, a week, or more. Theoretically,?it could last for years,?Rogers told NBC News via email,?but the design the team has been working on was made for the two-week post-operative period.

They use wireless power ? harvesting energy from radio transmissions to operate?the circuits. Rogers said that they can do non-rechargeable batteries, too, but that work isn't published yet.

So far, they've put together a temperature monitor and a tiny camera, both of which could be used for a number of purposes in the medical establishment. The next step, aside from applying for the usual testing and approvals, is to make the devices responsive to things like light or pressure, so that they could be activated or perhaps even destroyed at the command of a doctor or patient.

Beyond the body, such biodegradable devices could also safely be introduced to natural environments without the need to recover them, and without the risk of polluting or poisoning local wildlife.

The research was made possible by a number of grants from DARPA, the NSF, the NIH, and others. The paper is entitled "A physically transient form of silicon electronics," and can be found in this week's edition of the journal Science.

In the Old Road: No, I Have Not Decorated For Fall Yet!

I am about to explode with Fall decorating inspiration! ?Pictures of fall wreaths, mantels and cute little pumpkins are everywhere in blogland. ?I was hoping to have a fabulous fall-themed post for you this weekend with lots of pictures of how I decorated my mantel, shelves and porch for the new season.

Yep, that was the plan. ?Except for one thing, I can't find my fall decorations! ?I ransacked every room in my house yesterday looking for them. ?I repeated "they're somewhere in this house" to myself as if that would help me find them. ?But....I failed to find them (head hung in shame).

As I sat among the chaos in my house last night, I began to dream of a room. ?A room in my house where I could walk in and there would be neatly labeled ?sections of my holiday and seasonal decorations. ?Everything was clean, organized and the room smelled like the inside of a Kirkland's store. ?Ahhh!

Snap! ?Back to reality. ?Frustrated, I searched Pinterest for some holiday/craft room organization images and tips. ?Since I have nothing to show you in this post, I'll share a little of what I found.

Here is where my dream holiday/craft storage room originated from. ?This is the home decor and craft storage room at Fox Hollow Cottage. ?Amazing, right? ?Go over there and tell Shannon how jealous you are of her room. ?Tell her I sent you and I want her to design my dream room. ?K?

I want a wall of shelves, floor to ceiling, full of craft supplies and holiday/seasonal decor items like this one.
Or this one....If I had a room like this in my house, I would never leave it. I want it to be pretty and girly....

OK, I'm procrastinating again. ?I need to get back to my messy, disorganized house. ?I will continue my search for fall decor. ?I have a goal. ?I will not be out done by Miss Fancy-pants, "I have the perfect storage room" Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage. ?

Challenge accepted!

Landslides kill at least 19 (and probably many more) in Northern India (with images)

The S. asian summer monsoon typically starts to withdraw in early September.? This year, once again, this withdrawal is late (the seventh year in a row that this has happened).? The result has been a late bite in the tail with a burst of heavy rainfall affecting the northern areas, especially the Himalayan province of Uttarakhand.? Across in Darjeeling landslides have also been occurring ? the Save the Hills blog has a description of their impacts, which includes some good photographs.? Fortunately there have been no reported fatalities.? That is not the case back in Uttarakhand, where heavy landslides overnight yesterday are reported to have killed at least 19 people.? The worst affected area seems to be the Rudraprayag area, where 14 people are reported to have been killed and it is estimated that 25 to 30 people remain buried.? It is also reported that five people were killed in Bageshwar.

Within India some news reports suggest higher losses, but this is unconfirmed.? Zee News for example is reporting that 33 bodies have been recovered, and a further 35 people are missing.? It is notable that just as with the other (lower totalled) reports these figures are attributed to Piyush Rautela, who is the? Executive Director of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Department.? It may well be that this is a later and more reliable figure.

Climate Himalaya have sent a team to the site and have posted a series of very impressive photographs of the disaster.? They are reporting 68 deaths, with many more people still buried.

The image above appears to show a very mobile flow type event.? On intial inspection this might have initiated as a quite small slide in colluvium high on the slope, with lots of entrainment of debris.? Note the water flowing into the scar on the left side, and the apparently quite deep, wedge-shaped scar on the lower portion.? Finally, there are several buried houses at the foot of the slope and on the left side, supporting the idea that there may have been many fatalities

Family of woman, 77, dragged from car seek apology

    By Randy McIlwain, NBCdfw.com

The family of a 77-year-old woman dragged from her car during a traffic stop by police in Texas says a formal apology and anger-management training for the officer is needed to make things right, NBCDFW.com reported.

Lynn Bedford's videotaped arrest has gone viral, sparking opinions across the country. The video shows Sgt. Gene Geheb pulling Bedford, of Cleburne, from her sports utility vehicle after she did not hand over her license and refused to get out of the vehicle.

Her granddaughter, Aubrey McQue, sought the video from Keene police and made it public.

"There was 19 seconds from when he first initially asked her for her driver's license to when he laid his hands on her -- 19 seconds," she said.

The video shows that the officer requested Bedford's license four times before telling her that he would take her to jail if she did not give it to him.

    Read more from NBCDFW.com

After Bedford told him, "Well, go ahead," he opened her car door, grabbed her arm and asked her to step out of the vehicle 10 times. He pulled her from the vehicle after she said, "I will not."

McQue said the officer's use of force was excessive.

"The video does speak for itself," she said. "Not once did she refuse to give her driver's license to him. She said, 'I'll give it to you in a minute,' and no patience was afforded to her. He controlled the entire situation, and he made it go in the direction it did. He let it escalate; he controlled that."

The officer said he stopped Bedford after he clocked her going 66 mph in a 50-mph zone. The family is not disputing the speeding citation but is fighting the charge of failure to present a driver's license.

McQue said her grandmother was speeding because she had a bladder infection and needed to get to a bathroom. The road her grandmother was on did not have a public bathroom in sight, she said.

Cop drags woman, 77, from car after ID refusal

McQue said manners and common sense on the part of the officer would have resulted in a different outcome.

"I know from experience from senior citizens and elderly people that they don't have to move faster," she said. "They take a more leisurely pace to do things, and that's the respect afforded them because they've lived so long."

Keene city administrator Bill Guinn, who has known the family for 30 years, said he called after hearing about the incident and offered to arrange a sit-down meeting with the police department.

The Bedfords have declined. The family retained an attorney but said they don't plan a lawsuit at this time.

"I feel badly for what happened, but that's the way it happened," Guinn said. "It's not the way we want anyone to feel about Keene or to see Keene. Keene is a great town, but there are these things that happen."

    Sleepless and tearful
Bedford's family said this has never happened to her before. Since the video became public, her home phone constantly rings, and she hasn't slept. The family said Bedford is embarrassed, feeling like her life has been reduced to a video and Internet opinion polls about her as a person.

McQue said she was speaking on Bedford's behalf because her grandmother can't talk about the incident without crying.

"An apology would be nice, because she really is embarrassed by this -- that people think that she's a criminal. She's not a criminal," she said.

Read more US stories from NBC News

Keene residents said they have noticed that Bedford's arrest is getting national attention.

"I have people call me from Chicago, one from Michigan, so I'm getting phone calls from people wanting to know what's going on in Keene," Dan Roberts said.

He said that everyone in town has their own opinion.

"I watched the video, and I think she was wrong," Roberts said. "She should've handed over her driver's license and ID, and it would've been all over."

    But Rachel Jessup disagreed.

"More are siding with her because she's a 77-year-old lady," she said. "People feel bad for her."

"He's a cop," she said. "You expect police officers to be rational and handle situations in a more mature way."

NBC 5's Amanda Guerra contributed to this report.

Credit Sesame Adds Social Comparison Tools, Lets You See How Your Debt Compares With People Like You

sesameCredit Sesame, the personal finance service (and TechCrunch Disrupt alum), which provides free credit scores and other information aimed at helping consumers get out of debt, is today launching a new feature that will allow users to compare their financial situations to their peers' and the market in order to see where they stand. Not to worry -- you won't be swapping credit scores with your Facebook BFFs here. Instead, the feature lets users see how they compare with others in their age group, income group, and in the same region, allowing them to compare things like total debt and credit usage.

    iOS 6 coming soon, here's what's new

    7 hrs.

We first heard about iOS 6?during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, but on Thursday,?Apple's senior vice president of iOS Software Scott Forstall finally shared more details about the latest version of the company's mobile operating system ??and revealed that?we're getting it on Sept. 19.

The new iPhone 5 will ship on Sept. 21 with iOS 6 preloaded, but folks who own an iPhone 3GS, an?iPhone 4, an iPhone 4S, a?fourth-generation iPod Touch, an?iPad 2 or a?third-generation iPad will be able to download the software update for free on Sept. 19.

As we've learned during WWDC, iOS 6 will bring over 200 new features to customers. "We think you?re going to love it," Forstall says.

    Siri
Siri's gotten a lot?smarter in iOS 6. She's learned a lot of new languages (Italian, Mandarin,?Cantonese, and more) and become friends with a lot of new services (such as OpenTable, Yelp, Rotten Tomatoes, and others).

The personal assistant can now offer significantly more information when asked about sports, restaurants, movies and more. You can?make restaurant reservations or get movie reviews. Thanks to better support for Twitter,?you can also ask Siri to tweet for you.

It is now also finally possible to launch apps using Siri. Just tell her you want to "play Angry Birds" and see what happens.?

    Facebook
The folks at?Apple integrated Facebook into iOS 6 in the same way they integrated Twitter into the last major version of iOS.?There's now a neat "tap to post" option in the Notification Center ?(and there's a "tap to tweet" button as well, of course).

Facebook is deeply integrated into the Calendar app?as well, meaning that Facebook events (and birthdays listed on Facebook) will appear on your device's calendar.

Reply with message or remind me later
If you find yourself in a situation where you're unable to take a call, you can now instruct your iPhone to send a pre-set message to the caller or to remind you to call the person back. This is incredibly handy if you're in a rush and not in the mood to pick up a call just to say "I'm busy. I'll call you back."

    Do not disturb
A "do not disturb" feature was added in iOS 6. It means that you can tell your phone that it should silence alerts or incoming calls for a while, so that you can sleep in peace or enjoy a quiet, interruption-free evening with someone special.

This do not disturb feature allows for a lot of fine-tuning, meaning that you can make sure that people in your "favorites" list or contacts will always ring through or that your phone should ring if someone calls twice within three minutes.

    FaceTime
FaceTime now works over 3G, not just over Wi-Fi. And you don't have to worry about whether you're selecting someone's phone number or Apple ID when placing a FaceTime call?? because the two are?now united.

    Photo?Stream
You can now easily share your Photo Streams with friends or family. All you have to do is choose a photo and an album to share ? your pals will receive a notification and the photos will appear in an album where they can comment.

    Mail
The Mail app got some nice new tweaks. The VIPs feature will allow you to mark individuals as important, so that their emails will be starred and appear in a "flagged" mailbox. You can adjust alert settings for VIPs separately as well.

Oh, and it's now even simpler to add photos or videos into emails and?the inbox can be refreshed with a pull. Not bad!

    Passbook
A?new app called Passbook allows you to collect and store boarding passes, discount cards, movie tickets, and all the things you'd normally have to print out and scan once you arrive at a business.?

Thanks to location support, the app will even pull up the relevant card once you are near the place where you'd use it. (This means that if you're near a Starbucks, Passbook would pull up your Starbucks card automatically, if you're at an airport, Passbook would pull up your boarding pass automatically, and so on.)?

As a bonus, the?cards in Passbook are live-updating, meaning that your boarding pass will always have the latest boarding information.

    Guided access
Apple's adding something called guided access to iOS 6. This tool?will allow you to disable certain controls in order to make your device a bit more kid-friendly.

    Maps
As confirmed in June, Apple's ditching Google Maps in iOS 6. It will use its own mapping solution now. There's Yelp integration, traffic information (with real-time crowd-sourced data), automatically re-adjusting routes, and the ability for Siri to answer the age-old "are we there yet?"

Apple's also adding something called "Flyover" to Maps. This feature makes the whole world look a bit like a Sim City game by showing 3-D models of geographical features and buildings.

The best part though, is the fact that there are now turn-by-turn directions in Maps. Siri is?now able to guide you to and from places. Downside is that there appear to be no public transportation directions in iOS 6, based on rumors.

    Lost mode
The Find My iPhone feature now includes something called "lost mode." This mode will allow you to send a phone number to a missing device in order to allow whoever found it to call you. (This is, of course, assuming that someone is interested in tracking you down and returning your beloved iDevice.)

    Safari
Safari now has iCloud tabs?? which allow for browsing sessions to be synced across your devices?? as well as an offline reading list. You'll now also be able to upload photos right from Safari to your favorite websites. Talk about time saving!

    What else?
It's tough to cover all 200 of the new features found in iOS 6, but let's just say that there are plenty more little tweaks and gems to be found in the new mobile operating system. We'll give you a more thorough rundown soon.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Obtaining noticed on the internet ? Digital Advertising and marketing ...

The net has grown from a tiny network of academics needing an approach to trade investigation into a world-spanning, ubiquitous marketplace and repository for practically every achievable type of details and knowledge. How does a modest company keep away from being washed away within the continual tide of acquiring, promoting and marketers hawking every conceivable item (and some challenging to conceive?)?

The web offers benefits for both customer and proprietor in that one can search for just what is desired, with no the bother of endless telephone calls, driving to malls, or poring over mail-order catalogs. A fast keyword or 3, and hundreds of outcomes vie for focus on the screen. Making certain your company is among these results near the best is a combination of aspects: specificity in item offerings, Search engine optimization of internet content and linking to and from connected topics and websites.

The only strategy to get noticed on the net would be to have a listing or presence, whether or not a dedicated website, advertisements on relevant websites, or by word-of-mouth. Oftentimes ads on on the internet journals, informative web sites, or e-zines (online magazines) are less expensive than space within a print publication, at the same time as getting offered to a wider audience than a dedicated site could possibly be. Rates are usually offered for every day, weekly, or monthly terms, increasing flexibility and enabling a tight price range much more leeway. Word-of-mouth marketing might be very low cost, however the returns could be tough to quantify. Sponsoring internet shows including podcasts or webcasts can be a fantastic and inexpensive way to gain word-of-mouth exposure. Numerous occasions, a podcaster is going to be so thrilled to obtain sponsorship that rates could be negotiated for very small, but make sure to strategy a podcaster which has a show associated somehow for your enterprise. Do not overlook resources like Google?s Adwords either, as they could be slightly pricier than equivalent choices like banner advertisements, but they are shown to be far far more powerful than pop-ups, banners, or pay-per-click ads as a result of their specific targeting.

When a prospective customer decides to look up an item that you simply sell, is he or she going to locate your web site or listing? Getting certain in the terms utilised in your site or listing is key, as keywords are what drive the search engines like google like Google and Yahoo. In case your firm sells shoes, it?s not enough to place the word ?shoes? in your site?it has to be anticipatory to the searches that prospective buyers are performing. Most clients have an idea of what they may be seeking for when carrying out a search, so as opposed to ?shoes,? a buyer will search for ?imported Italian leather shoes.? Certain focusing of terminology and item listings are involved in Seo (Seo), as Search engine optimization is driven by certain search phrases and their repetition or place on a page. In the event the term ?Italian Leather Shoes? is employed 15 times on a site, it?ll pop up higher on the rating listings than one particular with all the same words, but only as a page heading or title. It will be straightforward to go overboard on this if it had been the only criteria, but it is only among a lot of distinct strategies search engines use to list websites by relevance. Our post on Search engine optimization, situated here, is really a wonderful reference to optimizing your site for maximum Search Engine Efficiency.

Using a clear thought of where you wish to go with Web marketing, it could be an useful tool to expand your business in to the digital realm, but be cautious not to go overboard, as all advertising and marketing ultimately crosses into the zone of restricted return. Buyers are seeking for what they want?it?s up to you to ensure they run into you, and the only way they will is for you personally to make certain your company is at the places they are going to go.

"Junk" DNA Holds Clues to Common Diseases

When the draft of the human genome was published?in 2000, researchers thought that they had obtained the secret decoder ring for the human body. Armed with the code of 3 billion basepairs of As, Ts, Cs and Gs and the 21,000 protein-coding genes, they hoped to be able to find the genetic scaffolds of life?both in sickness and in health.

But in the 12 years since then, very few diseases?almost all of them very rare?have been linked definitively to changes in the genes themselves. And large, genome-wide studies searching for genetic underpinnings for more common diseases, such as lung cancer or autism, have pointed to the nether regions of the genome between the protein-producing genes?areas that were often thought to contain ?junk? DNA that was not part of the pantheon of known genes.

An international consortium of hundreds of scientists has now deciphered a large portion of the strange language of this junk DNA and found it to be not junk at all. Rather it contains important signals for regulating our genes, determining disease risk, height and many of the other complex aspects of human biology that make each one of us different. The findings are described in 30 linked papers published online September 5 in Nature?and other journals and described at the consortium's Web site. (Scientific American?is part of Nature Publishing Group.)?

Called the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE), the group is focused on understanding not just the elements of the genome but also how they work together. "The complexity of our biology resides not in the number of our genes but in the regulatory switches," Eric Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and collaborator on the ENCODE project, said in a press briefing September 5. Through more than 1,600 separate experiments, analysis of more than 140 cell types and a massive amount of data analysis, the group found about 4 million of these so-called switches and can now assign functions to more than 80 percent of the entire genome. Compare that to the roughly 2 percent of the genome that is responsible for the protein-coding genes that researchers have been relying on to look for diseases and traits. "The genome project was about establishing the set of letters that make up the blueprint," Green said. "When we finally put that blueprint together, we realized we could only really understand very little of it."

These newly catalogued switches not only activate and de-activate genes, but also control how much of each protein gets made and when. They are involved in epigenetic changes, such as DNA methylation, which has been implicated in cardiovascular disease and other conditions. The new data promise to improve our understanding of many common diseases that might have similar genetic underpinnings. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have continuously come up short in identifying specific genes for common diseases, John Stamatoyannopoulos, associate professor of genome sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine and ENCODE collaborator, said in the briefing. "Frustratingly, about 95 percent of information from these studies has been pointing to regions of the genome that do not make proteins," he said. But, now with the ENCODE data, they can begin to decipher what genetic switches and functions might be common within and among these diseases. "We're now exploring previously hidden connections between diseases that may explain similar clinical [symptoms]," he noted.

It will most likely be some time before these new findings, which are freely available, are put to use in approved therapies. "The pharmaceutical industry has largely given up on the genome," Stamatoyannopoulos said. "And I think this is going to tremendously reinvigorate the utility of the genome." These additional genetic elements, however, are already in use for screening and testing for diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and autoimmune diseases, Richard Myers, president of HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Ala., noted in the briefing.

The group has funding to continue their efforts and does not anticipate a slowdown in discoveries going forward. "Our blueprint is remarkably complicated, and we need to be committed for the long haul to understand it," Green said. Compared with the publication of draft human genome 12 years ago?and with initial findings from the ENCODE project published over the past several years?"the questions that we can now ask are more sophisticated," Green said. And hopefully, those better questions will lead to more satisfying and medically useful answers.

HTC eyes sales boost for Windows phones

    NEW YORK | Thu Sep 6, 2012 7:18pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - HTC Corp has high hopes that Microsoft Corp software will boost its smartphone sales due to a strong new design and support from wireless service providers, according to Jason Mackenzie, HTC's president of sales and marketing.

Taiwan's HTC, which derives most of its revenue from phones based on Google Inc' Android software, is currently facing a sharp sales decline as it struggles to compete with iPhone maker Apple Inc and Android rivals such as Samsung Electronics.

HTC will face a stiff battle with smartphone makers Samsung and Nokia Oyj, Microsoft's main handset partner, in the market for phones using Microsoft Windows Phone 8 software.

But Mackenzie said on Thursday that HTC Windows devices will stand up well against its bigger rivals. Nokia did not name any wireless service provider partners when it unveiled its flagship Windows device at a New York event on Wednesday nor did it even give any general indication of operator support.

In comparison Mackenzie said his company has firm commitments from operators to sell its Windows Phone 8 devices.

"I feel very strongly we've got very concrete carrier support in every region around the world including the United States and I'm not talking about just one carrier," the executive told Reuters. "Our plan is to go big on Windows 8."

Mackenzie declined to give specifics on where and when the phone would be sold.

But he did promise that Taipei-based HTC would come out with "a unique (industrial design) language for Windows phones, a language that can be held up by Microsoft as a flagship."

In comparison, he said, other Windows phones makers who also produce Android devices "haven't typically given their A plus designs to Windows phones."

"They've been designating those to Android," he said.

While Android phones generate the bulk of HTC's revenue today, Mackenzie said it would like to see "a more balanced portfolio" in terms of Android and Windows revenue.

"That wouldn't mean we'd want to dial back on Android," he said. "We want to grow Android and grow Windows at the same time."

However, this could be a tough job. While HTC's One-branded Android phones unveiled earlier this year have been enjoying good reviews by analysts and tech blogs, this has not been reflected in its sales.

After its profit fell by more than half in the second quarter, HTC on Aug 3 forecast a third-quarter revenue decline of as much as 23 percent, which was much worse than analysts had feared.

Earlier on Thursday HTC said its August sales were weaker than its July sales.

But Mackenzie said that he sees HTC's current problems as "temporary" and that he hopes to turn the company's fortunes around with better marketing of its brand and its devices.

"We have to get more efficient with the dollars that we're spending and turn every dollar into five," he said, while promising to use social media and online advertising to greater effect in its marketing. "It's about being more bold."
