Police scoured mountain peaks for days, using everything from bloodhounds to high-tech helicopters in their manhunt for Dorner, a revenge-seeking ex-cop. (AP) ? Investigators determined fairly quickly that the burned human remains found after a shootout in Southern California mountains are those of Christopher Dorner, the ex-police officer suspected in a rampage that left four people dead. But the answer to a second question will likely prove more elusive ? how did he die?

Evidence including descriptions from witnesses and the discovery of personal items including a driver's license had already led authorities to figure that it was Dorner who exchanged heavy gunfire with San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies at a cabin Tuesday, killing one person and never leaving as the cabin as it went up in flames.

But on Thursday the issue was officially put to rest when sheriff-coroner's spokeswoman Jodi Miller announced that dental examination had definitively shown the remains were Dorner's.

Virtually no other information was released. An autopsy report on the charred body was still being completed, and toxicology tests typically take several weeks to return results.

That means questions are likely to linger over which of three ways Dorner may have died: Was it the hail of gunfire that came from the deputies outside? Was it suicide by the single shot that was heard from inside the cabin as the flames began to rise? Or was it the flames themselves that engulfed both Dorner and the cabin?

The cause of the flames has remained in question in the days that followed Dorner's Tuesday death.

After milder tear gas had failed to bring Dorner out, deputies shot pyrotechnic tear gas canisters ? called "burners" by deputies over the radio during the standoff and by Sheriff John McMahon at a subsequent news conference ? into the cabin.

McMahon would only say that the fire broke out immediately after the canisters were sent in, stopping short of saying that they sparked the fire.

He added that the burning of the cabin "was not on purpose, We did not intentionally burn down that cabin to get Mr. Dorner out." Another news conference was scheduled for later Friday afternoon, but it was not clear what the department intended to reveal.

Meanwhile, court documents show Dorner gathered information on a women's basketball coach and her fiance before he apparently killed them earlier this month.

The Orange County Register reported that Irvine police believe Dorner researched Monica Quan, 28, and her 27-year-old boyfriend, Keith Lawrence. The records also say Dorner may have had documents containing information about Quan and her family.

Police tied Dorner to the slayings after reading a manifesto he wrote in which he sought revenge against those he believed ended his law enforcement career. Quan's father represented Dorner during a disciplinary hearing.

The search for Dorner began last week after authorities said he had launched a deadly revenge campaign against the Los Angeles Police Department for his firing, warning in the manifesto that he would bring "warfare" to LAPD officers and their families.

The manhunt for Dorner brought police to Big Bear Lake, 80 miles east of Los Angeles, after his burned-out pickup truck was found abandoned last week. His footprints disappeared on frozen soil and hundreds of officers who searched the area and checked out each building failed to find him.

Karen and Jim Reynolds were next to see him inside their cabin-style condo within 100 yards of a command post for the manhunt when they arrived to ready it for vacationers.

Dorner, who at the time was being sought for three killings, confronted the couple with a drawn gun, "jumped out and hollered 'stay calm,'" Jim Reynolds said at a news conference.

His wife screamed and ran, but Dorner caught her, Reynolds said. The couple said they were taken to a bedroom where Dorner ordered them to lie on a bed and then on the floor. Dorner bound their arms and legs with plastic ties, gagged them with towels and covered their heads with pillowcases.

"I really thought it could be the end," Karen Reynolds said.

The couple believed Dorner had been staying in the cabin at least since Feb. 8, the day after his burned truck was found nearby. Dorner told them he had been watching them by day from inside the cabin as they did work outside. The couple, who live nearby, only entered the unit Tuesday.

"He said we are very hard workers," Karen Reynolds said.

After Dorner fled in their purple Nissan Rogue, Karen Reynolds managed to call 911 from a cellphone on the coffee table.

Police have not commented on the Reynoldses' account, but the notion of him holed up just across the street from the command post was shocking to many, but not totally surprising to some experts familiar with the complications of such a manhunt.

"Chilling. That's the only word I could use for that," said Ed Tatosian, a retired SWAT commander for the Sacramento Police Department. "It's not an unfathomable oversight. We're human. It happens."

Law enforcement officers, who had gathered outside daily for briefings, were stunned by the revelation. One official later looking on Google Earth exclaimed that he'd parked right across the street from the Reynoldses' cabin each day.

The sheriff's department has refused to answer questions about how one of the largest manhunts in years could have missed Dorner.

Timothy Clemente, a retired FBI SWAT team leader who was part of the search for Atlanta Olympics bomber Eric Rudolph, said searchers had to work methodically. When there's a hot pursuit, they can run after a suspect into a building. But in a manhunt, the search has to slow down and police have to have a reason to enter a building.

"You can't just kick in every door," he said.

NHL meets with IIHF again on Olympic issue

(AP) ? Two days of talks between the NHL and Olympic officials wrapped up on Friday with some signs of progress toward a resolution on the issue of having the league send its players to the 2014 Sochi Games.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and International Ice Hockey Federation President Rene Fasel met for about 2.5 hours on Friday after a 90-minute get-together Thursday night. No new talks were immediately scheduled, but the sides are expected to meet again.

NHL players have participated in the past four Olympic Games, and the league is weighing whether it gets enough return on its overall investment, which requires North American hockey to shut down its season for over two weeks to take part.

As Bettman and Fasel headed to lunch Friday, the commissioner said the meetings were productive, but added that both sides have work to do before an agreement can be reached.

China joins U.S., Japan, EU in condemning N. Korea nuke test

AFP) - North Korea stages its most powerful nuclear test yet, claiming a breakthrough with a "miniaturized" device in a striking act of defiance that drew condemnation from global powers, including its sole patron China.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea conducted its third nuclear test on Tuesday in defiance of existing U.N. resolutions, drawing condemnation from around the world, including from its only major ally, China, which summoned the North Korean ambassador to protest.

The reclusive North said the test was an act of self-defense against "U.S. hostility" and threatened further, stronger steps if necessary.

It said the test had "greater explosive force" than the 2006 and 2009 tests. Its KCNA news agency said it had used a "miniaturized" and lighter nuclear device, indicating that it had again used plutonium which is more suitable for use as a missile warhead.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the third of his line to rule the country, has presided over two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test during his first year in power, pursuing policies that have propelled his impoverished and malnourished country closer to becoming a nuclear weapons power.

China, which has shown signs of increasing exasperation with the recent bellicose tone of its neighbor, summoned the North Korean ambassador in Beijing and protested sternly, the Foreign Ministry said.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said China was "strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposed" to the test and urged North Korea to "stop any rhetoric or acts that could worsen situations and return to the right course of dialogue and consultation as soon as possible".

China is a permanent member of the Security Council.

U.S. President Barack Obama labeled the test a "highly provocative act" that hurt regional stability and pressed for new sanctions.

"The danger posed by North Korea's threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies," Obama said in a statement.

The Security Council will meet on Tuesday to discuss its reaction to the test, although North Korea is already one of the most heavily sanctioned states in the world and has few external economic links that can be targeted.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the test was a "grave threat" that could not be tolerated. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the test was a "clear and grave violation" of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear arms program and return to talks. NATO condemned the test as an "irresponsible act" that posed a grave threat to world peace.

The test "was only the first response we took with maximum restraint", an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry, which acts as Pyongyang's official voice to the outside world, said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

"If the United States continues to come out with hostility and complicates the situation, we will be forced to take stronger, second and third responses in consecutive steps."

North Korea often threatens the United States and its "puppet", South Korea, with destruction in colorful terms.

North Korea told the U.N. disarmament forum in Geneva that it would never bow to resolutions on its nuclear program and that prospects were "gloomy" for the denuclearization of the divided Korean peninsula because of a "hostile" U.S. policy.

South Korea, still technically at war with the North after the 1950-53 civil war ended in a mere truce, also denounced the test.

The magnitude was roughly twice as large as that of 2009, Lassina Zerbo, director of the international data centre division of the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization, said. The U.S. Geological Survey said that a seismic event measuring 5.1 magnitude had occurred.

"It was confirmed that the nuclear test that was carried out at a high level in a safe and perfect manner using a miniaturized and lighter nuclear device with greater explosive force than previously did not pose any negative impact on the surrounding ecological environment," KCNA said.

SC Johnson Purchases Wind Power in Mexico

Energy Manager Today Staff

SC Johnson Mexico is participating in the Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) wind farm program via a power purchase agreement, which will enable the company to increase its use of renewable energy at its Toluca, Mexico facility to an estimated 86 percent, up by 65 percent.

The turbines are in Oaxaca and were constructed by ENEL, in partnership with CFE, which provides the infrastructure for energy transport.

SC Johnson will begin using the purchased wind power mid-2013. Participation in the program, and the purchase agreement, advance the company?s commitment to increase its use of renewable energy to 44 percent of total electricity use worldwide by 2016.

In December 2012, SC Johnson activated two new wind turbines at its Waxdale manufacturing facility in Mt. Pleasant, Wis. The wind turbines will produce about 8 million kWh of electricity annually.

Teacher arrested for bringing loaded gun to school

By Brandi Powell, Steven Luke, Lauren Steussy and R. Stickney, NBCSanDiego.com

A San Diego teacher arrested for having a loaded gun on campus once told students that he had the gun to protect the school, according to one student.

Farb Middle School teacher Ned Walker, 41, was arrested Monday in the school's parking lot for having a .380 loaded semi-automatic handgun with a 7-round magazine as well as a 2.5-inch locking blade knife in his car.

After the school's staff told the vice principal that Walker may be storing ammunition on campus, she contacted school police, according to district spokesperson Jack Brandais.?

?A search of the two cabinets revealed no ammunition or weapons, ?however during a search of the parking lot and the suspect?s car in the parking lot, it was determined he was in possession of a loaded firearm,? said San Diego Unified District Chief of Police Rueben Littlejohn.

Read more from NBCSanDiego.com

When he was first questioned by police, Walker denied possessing the gun, officials said.

Officers say they found a gun and wallet holster in the teacher's front right pocket during a pat-down.

?This employee has somewhat of an infatuation with guns and brought the weapon to the school to protect himself in the event of a violent intruder,? Littlejohn said.

Walker faces a felony charge of possession of a firearm on school property. He's also facing charges of possession of a knife with a locking blade.

Police are currently investigating the incident to determine how long he was carrying the gun on school grounds.?

San Diego Unified School District has a zero tolerance policy involving weapons, controlled substances or violence.

?With the exception of police, no one should be carrying a gun on school grounds,? Littlejohn said.

A group of Ned Walker's former students said they knew the teacher had a weapon.

Walker?s former student Astin Martin told NBC 7 San Diego, "We all knew. We all knew that he had a gun.?

?He just said it was for protection for us. We didn't really think he'd doing anything with it, he's a good teacher," Martin said.

When asked how it became common knowledge on campus, Martin said Walker revealed that he had the gun to his students at the beginning of the year.

?'I just have it for protection reasons in case something happened at the school,'? Astin recalled the teacher telling the class. ?And we're like 'Oh, [okay]', and he's like 'Yeah', and it was just pretty much, we knew about it."

Martin told NBC 7 San Diego the idea of a teacher having a gun on campus didn't bother the class.

"It made us feel extra protected," he said.

Parents feel differently. Janine Lint believes it?s completely unacceptable regardless of the reason.

"I understand that there's a point where we all want to protect the kids, but I think that's up to the school board to place security at schools. I don't think it's the teacher's responsibility to play security guard," Lint said.

Parent Jong Riojas believes there are other ways Walker could offer a feeling of security to students.

"No, it's not right. It's not safe for kids. He can do other things, you know, come in the school, talk to the kids, those things are safe, but gun stuff, that's very danger[ous], you know," Riojas said.

Walker was booked into San Diego Central Jail just after noon on Monday, the Sheriff's Department website showed.

Brandais said Walker has been with the San Diego Unified School District since November 2003.

Interim principal?Courtney Rizzo issued a statement to parents on the school's website.

"At Farb Middle School, our first priority is to provide a safe learning environment for our children," read a statement on the school's website. "We also believe in keeping our school community informed about incidents that occur on campus affect our children."

The incident occurred just days after a Poway middle school student was taken into custody in an alleged school shooting plot. An email to a school administrator referenced 3,000 rounds of ammunition as well as numerous firearms in the plot.

One parent says the school should have been better about informing parents and students of the teacher sooner.?

"My eighth-grade daughter was unaware that anything had happened until she got home from school at 5:30 p.m.," Farb Middle School parent Heather Fitzner Wooldridge wrote to NBC 7 San Diego. "Parents are outraged that more information is not being given."

"I understand that you may want more information but due to the fact that this is an active investigation, we are not at liberty to release any additional information or details," Rizzo wrote in the school's statement.?"Our focus is to continue to ensure that our students are safe, the learning process goes on as usual, and we work with the proper authorities."

Walker currently teaches seventh and eighth grade English at the middle school but once taught at Hamilton Elementary School.

He has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

$1 million reward for fugitive ex-L.A. cop

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A record $1 million reward was posted on Sunday for information leading to the capture of a fugitive former Los Angeles policeman suspected of targeting police officers and their families in three killings committed in retaliation for his 2008 firing.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said the reward, raised from private donations, police unions, businesses and city and county governments, marks the largest sum ever offered in Southern California in a criminal investigation.

The reward was posted as law enforcement agencies across the region pressed on for a fourth day in their search for the suspect, ex-LAPD officer and U.S. Navy reservist Christopher Dorner, 33. Beck described it as the most extensive manhunt ever mounted in the Los Angeles area.

He called the spate of revenge-driven violence Dorner is accused of committing "an act of domestic terrorism."

"This is a man who has targeted those who we entrust to protect the public. His actions cannot go unanswered," Beck said.

At a news conference, Beck said investigators were making progress but he declined to elaborate, saying they presumed that if Dorner is still alive, he would be following media coverage of the manhunt closely.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa added, "Our dedication to catching this killer remains steadfast, our confidence in bringing him to justice remains unshaken."

An LAPD spokesman also said police would be providing extra security for the recording industry's Grammy Awards ceremony on Sunday at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angles.

The search for Dorner has been focused in the snow-covered San Bernardino Mountains northeast of Los Angeles since a pickup truck belonging to Dorner was found abandoned and burning near the popular ski resort community of Big Bear Lake on Thursday.

Police throughout the region also have chased down numerous unconfirmed sightings and dead-end leads.

One of the latest of those, prompted by calls from two individuals reporting they had seen someone resembling Dorner, led police on Sunday to a hardware store in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley community of Northridge.

The store was evacuated and searched, but no evidence of Dorner's presence was uncovered, police said.

His last confirmed encounters with authorities came early on Thursday in two Riverside County towns east of Los Angeles, police said. He is accused of exchanging gunfire with a pair of police officers in Corona, injuring one, and later ambushing two policemen at a stoplight in Riverside. One of those officers was killed, the other wounded.

'UNCONVENTIONAL WARFARE'

A rambling manifesto posted on Dorner's Facebook page last week claimed he was wrongly terminated from the LAPD in September 2008 and vowed to seek revenge by unleashing "unconventional and asymmetrical warfare" on police officers and their families.

A former Navy lieutenant, Dorner was named as a suspect in last weekend's slayings of a campus security officer and his fiance, the daughter of a retired Los Angeles police captain blamed in Dorner's manifesto for his dismissal. The couple, Keith Lawrence, 27, and Monica Quan, 28, were found shot dead last Sunday in their car on the top level of a parking structure in the city of Irvine, south of Los Angeles.

Dorner had ended his military service two days earlier, but the Navy has not disclosed the circumstances of his discharge.

Quan's father, Randy, had represented Dorner in disciplinary proceedings that led to his dismissal from the LAPD after a police inquiry found he had made false statements accusing a superior officer of using excessive force against a homeless person.

Beck announced on Saturday a reopening of the inquiry to "reassure the public that their police department is transparent and fair."

The LAPD also has launched an inquiry into a police shooting in which two women were wounded when officers opened fire on a pickup truck resembling Dorner's vehicle in a case of mistaken identity on Thursday. The two women, one of them aged 71, were delivering newspapers when they were shot.

The police officer who was killed in an ambush that morning was publicly identified on Sunday as Michael Crain, 34, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Riverside Police Department for 11 years.

LAPD spokesman Andrew Smith said "an army" of police officers would be providing security for a public memorial service planned for Crain on Wednesday.

In addition to keeping up the manhunt in and around Big Bear Lake, police were searching areas around the homes of more than 50 Los Angeles police officers whose families authorities believe Dorner has targeted as potential victims.

Comparing iPhone Twitter app timeline views

It's often been said that we enjoy an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Twitter apps for iPhone. Some of the best developers and designers have spent months and years crafting, and in some cases continually re-crafting, app for Twitter, striving for their versions of perfection. And this in spite of Twitter's recent proclamations encouraging third party clients to walk out onto ice flows or sand dunes and die already. Over the weekend, Phil Nickinson compared 17 Twitter app timelines for Android, and he promptly challenged me to do the same for iPhone. I one-upped him with 18, though admittedly I cheated by including 3 discontinued Twitter apps in the comparison.

It's interesting to see them all gridded up, to see the juxtaposition of consistency vs. creativity, readability vs. information density. I used the exact same feed point for each client, with the exception of the legacy apps at the bottom. It includes an @mention so that we can see how, if at all, a client highlights or otherwise distinguishes that type of post. I also got rid of ads, wherever possible, to keep things clean, and made sure basic controls were in a visible state.

Here then, in order, from top left to bottom right, are:

  1. Twitter, Twitterrific, Tweetbot
  2. Flurry, Twittelator Neue, Twittelator Pro
  3. Watercooler, Tweetlist, Tweetcaster
  4. Tweetlogix, Echofon Pro, Tweetings
  5. Tweetdeck, UberSocial, Osfoora
  6. Birdfeed, Tweetie, Reportage (discontinued)

Of course, the timeline view is only one aspect of a Twitter app, and can't properly address features and flourishes like gestures, notifications and filters, parallax image embeds, sorting, and other ways some of the clients have innovative and provided extra enjoyment and value.

Consider this comparison, then, just a start.

(Yes, the hero shot above is Ollie and Twitterrific 1.0, the original iPhone app that started it all, and one of the first inductees into our Hall of Fame.)

And if you want DVD-style extras, and a peak behind the scenes of your favorite Twitter apps, check out:

Meanwhile, look over the designs above and let me know what you think. Which Twitter apps do you use, and are they the same ones that appeal to you most in the comparison above? Any of the timelines attractive enough they encourage you check out an alternative app? And how do you think they compare to the best and brightest of the Android Twitter app timelines Phil looked at?

Reports of stampede at Hindu festival in India

ALLAHABAD, India (AP) ? At least 10 people were feared dead and 30 more were injured Sunday after a stampede broke out at a train station in the northern Indian town where millions of devout Hindus gathered for a religious festival, television news channels reported.

New Delhi Television channel reported that the stampede broke out after a footbridge at the Allahabad train station collapsed late Sunday and said at least 10 people were feared dead. CNN-IBN news channel said at least 20 were feared dead and that 30 were injured.

There was no immediate confirmation from any local officials.

An estimated 30 million devotees were expected to take a dip at the Sangam, the confluence of three rivers ? the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati ? on Sunday, one of the holiest bathing days of the Kumbh Mela, or Pitcher Festival. The festival lasts 55 days and is one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

The area is located at the edge of Allahabad in northern India.

The auspicious bathing days are decided by the alignment of stars, and devout Hindus believe a dip in the sacred river on one of these days will wash away their sins and free them from the cycle of death and rebirth.

The festival brings together millions of devout worshipers and thousands religious leaders and ascetics.

The most dramatic feature of the festival is the Naga sadhus ? ascetics with ash rubbed all over their bodies, wearing only marigold garlands ? leaping joyfully into the holy waters.

According to Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela celebrates the victory of gods over demons in a furious battle over nectar that would give them immortality. As one of the gods fled with a pitcher of the nectar across the skies, it spilled on four Indian towns_Allahabad, Nasik, Ujjain and Haridwar.

The Kumbh Mela is held four times every 12 years in those towns. Hindus believe that sins accumulated in past and current lives require them to continue the cycle of death and rebirth until they are cleansed. If they bathe at the Ganges on the most auspicious day of the festival, believers say they can rid themselves of their sins.

The problems of job searching and how not to go crazy | Cup of Tea ...

Last month I attended a student conference on digital preservation that was geared towards giving us advice on how to get in to a career in this area.

A theme that a few of the speakers touched on was the need to look for jobs outside the usual jobs titles.? For example, a job with the BBC digital sound archive was recently advertised under the title of ?Media Manager?.? Would you see that job and think, that will require my skills I?ll look closer?

This disparity between the job titles and what the job actually involves was discussed in a number of ways, but the primary area that interested me was during the round table discussion at the end when a few points were raised about how exactly we?re supposed to find these jobs if they have such vague job titles.

It was suggested by one of the panel members that we need to read the job descriptions to find out more.? This is of course an obvious and very true statement but a number of attendees felt this was not a practical solution due to the number of jobs being advertised.

For me this all brought up the question of where people look to find jobs?especially?if you?re not necessarily interested in working within a traditional library setting.

I asked my Twitter followers where they searched for jobs and I am indebted to all of them (credits at the end) for their suggestions and opinions.

It seems that the best approach to job searching is not to limit yourself to looking in only one place but to employ a diverse strategy of searching in a number of places that may be of use to you.

Below is a look at different approaches to searching for jobs and the pros and cons of each way.? It is important to note that some ways work very well for some people but it might not work for you, so job searching is all about getting the best out of these resources for yourself.

Specific company search.

You know you want to work for the British Library or Oxford University so you can just search their websites, right?? Well, of course you can do that, but you would be severely limiting yourself to only a few jobs. And your chances of getting (or finding new) employment would be restricted.? If you know you can only apply for jobs in one area (for example, London) then you can search the websites of all universities in London.? Of which there are a lot!? This is time consuming but not impossible.? But what about all the other places you could work.? Companies? Schools? Colleges? Charities?? You could do a search of a select few of these, but how many law firms will hire information specialists?? (Lots, by the way). Can you really search all of their websites?

Doing a company specific search alone only works if you only want to work for a handful of companies. ?If this is your ideal, then that is fine.? But I think for the majority of job searchers it would fall short of being totally adequate.

It is important to keep in mind that some companies only advertise on their own websites and a lot of universities don?t advertise junior posts (i.e library assistant/shelver positions) anywhere else. Picking a few company websites to directly get job listings from (preferably by rss or signing up to email alerts to save you time) is a useful addition to your job search techniques.

Tips: If you know which geographical area you?re looking in you could find the biggest companies and search them.? You could also add companies that you know don?t advertise elsewhere (or that have limited jobs appearing on other sites), for example, The British Library, BBC, etc?

Sector specific aggregators

Lisjobnet is the most useful website if you want to work in a library.? Although it says it is also for information jobs I have not found it particularly useful for any jobs outside the traditional areas.? It does seem very focused on library work and also for middle to higher positions.? I have many times found library assistant posts on other websites that are not on here.? There is also a similar problem with jobs.ac.uk.? Obviously this site is focused entirely on jobs within academic institutions and you can browse specifically in the sector you want.? However, I have also found jobs that required information researching/management skills which were in other categories.? Both of these sites have the bonus that you can sign up for email alerts which saves a lot of the bother of having to go and physically search the site yourself.? However, as already mentioned, they do seem limited in their scope.

Jobsforinfopros is useful for jobs in the wider sector, though it does just seem to aggregate from employment agencies and is very London focused.? Additionally, their service to sign up for email alerts requires you to a fill out a form which insists on only a few geographic areas being picked and on you stipulating a wage.? It you want complete flexibility in your search and aren?t that picky then this is completely useless.

Tips: see below ?General jobs sites?

General jobs sites

These type of sites cause me the greatest headache.? If a job that requires a library/information/archive qualification (or just experience) isn?t within a traditional setting sometimes the employer might not advertise it on a specialist website there but they might advertise on (for example) monster, totaljobs, Indeed etc? The problem with this is then searching for jobs.? What exactly do you search for?? You can?t possibly view every job on there, there are thousands.? If you try to limit your search by keywords what keywords do you choose?? Library? Archive? Information?? You will probably find all of these so vague that they come up with 1000s of results.? And as already mentioned above, many jobs now don?t feature key words in their title, so you need to search for key words in the job description.

I personally don?t find these searches targeted enough.? In one search for ?library assistant? I came up with 1869 results only 5 of which seemed to be what I was looking for, I?m not even sure how the rest ended up there as they weren?t relevant at all.

The best of these generic search sites I have found is Indeed.co.uk.? It also comes highly recommended by my Twitter followers.? It draws in jobs from a variety of sources and doesn?t seem to be dependent on companies adding the jobs to the site themselves (as Monster does).? I found that setting up email alerts for quite a few different search terms the best way to use the site.

Tips: If you?re not finding many jobs in one category try looking around in others for anything of interest. Set up email alerts if you can so you don?t have to do much legwork to get the latest jobs.? If you?re doing a key word search try not to stick to just one term, ?librarian? may come up with fewer results then ?library?.? Searching for generic terms such as ?information? may come up with a few information assistant roles but may also come up with thousands of irrelevant posts in which you can miss the few good ones, so sometimes being specific works better.? If you?re looking at a sector specific site which lists a vague job title, click on it and have a quick scan at the description, it might not be what you think it is.

Social Media

There are a few Twitter accounts that list jobs such as @uklibraryjobs but I don?t know of any companies who tweet their own job vacancies (on an account dedicated to vacancies only).? As an avid Tweeter I do need to remind myself constently that most people are not on Twitter, and even when companies are not all of them use it in the most productive way.? I would not recommend relying on Twitter for finding jobs.? Like all of the suggestions above it can be another way to search for jobs without really trying as they will pop up in your feed amongst gin and knitting discussions (I?m not being stereotypical, this is what my timeline looks like today).

I have no knowledge of any companies using Facebook to advertise vacancies so I did some quick investing whilst writing this blog post [pause to go off to Facebook and work out what to say next] and I can find nothing.? Anyone any the wiser please let me know.

Linkedin could be such a useful site?.jobs directly related to courses you have listed or key skills tagged could be shown to you in a coherently ordered manner.? Except, it doesn?t work like that.? A lot of American companies use it and I think it could become useful if more UK companies were to get on board with it.? I don?t think they will as people don?t seem to use it for job search, so it?s a vicious circle.

With all these social media opinions I?m really only using my own experience so I may have completely missed the boat on something?please use the comments to let me know of anything I?ve forgotten or that I?m just plain wrong about.

Tips: It?s worth following any companies on Twitter you particularly like the idea of working for, they may tweet job posts but you?ll also keep up to date with the latest news from them.? You don?t need to have a twitter account to look at accounts advertising jobs, though it will save you time if you get an account and follow them all, then there?ll all appear in a nice easy list without you having to click on each one individually.

Employment agencies

These are a great source of sector specific jobs though you need to use them slightly differently to how you would a straightforward job advert.? Although they will feature job adverts on site it is important to alo register yourself with the agency (get in touch and send them your CV) as a lot of their jobs will be sent directly to their clients before being put online.

I think there is a perception that a lot of agency jobs are temporary and require immediate starts.? Whilst this is true of a lot of agencies, they do all differ, and most of them also have permanent jobs too.

Tips:? I?ll repeat as mentioned about, don?t just rely on searching agencies websites, most of their jobs don?t end up there.? Register with them and if you don?t feel like they?re sending you many job openings speak to them directly as they may have misunderstood what type of position you?re looking for.

Word of mouth/networking

This is something I always forget about but was mentioned to me on Twitter this morning.? If people know you?re on the look out for a job they are quite likely to send your way anything they see that may be suitable for you.? I find this works very well on twitter, as people will tend to re-tweet or post jobs they see that are interesting which alerts me to these vacancies.

Networking cannot be underestimated for its usefulness in job searching.? If you?re at a conference/training event make sure you speak to people who work in a sector you?re interested in, if they remember you they may be the person you apply for a job with in the future (every little helps). It was suggested to me today that a good estimate is something in the region of 40% of jobs are never advertised, that is worth keeping in mind if you?re ever shy about approaching people. Even if a new job doesn?t come out of networking you are still learning a valuable amount about the sector and this research makes you a stronger candidate and more able to help others in the same position as you.

I will squeeze mailing lists into the section as well.? Quite often jobs will be posted on mailing lists by the people advertising vacancies (or people working in those places).? It?s a good idea to sign up to general and more specific mailing lists for areas you?re interested in working.

Tips: Keep an eye on what people are saying on Social Media, they may mention when there?s jobs going where they work and will also pass on any interesting posts they see whilst doing their own job search.? Keep an ear out for people talking about new projects getting started as it might be worth approaching project managers (or getting an introduction) to be in mind should any new vacancies open up.? If you?re interested in a small sector area, get in touch with people who currently do it, ask for advice, they may know of positions available, or keep you in mind if ones open up in the future.

Suggestions to employers

There is only so much the bedraggled job searcher can do without searching for jobs 24 hours a day and reading every job description on every website.? I have thought of a few ways that employers can make things easier so that the right people see the right jobs and employers get the best people applying.? These may be impractical for employers, but I live in an idealised world in my head where I assume employers want to hire the best people, silly me!

-?????? Try making your job descriptions less generic.? If you really want to call the post Senior Media Manger how about adding an (archives) or (library) in brackets after the title?

-?????? If your job requires specific skills/qualifications why not post it on websites that are dedicated to such people (ie lisjobnet).? Given that is the most viewed job site for people with an LIS qualification (judging by my unscientific pole on Twitter today) why not increase your chances that the right candidate will see if by also posting it there. This is particularly useful if your company is not in a sector that people would traditionally think to look at.

-?????? Add an RSS feed to your website vacancies page.? People are more likely to look at individual companies websites if they have a way to easily get at the information.

-?????? Have a twitter account just for your job vacancies.? Same reason as the above for RSS feeds.? Also, people will re-tweet your vacancies to a wider audience.

-?????? If UK companies would start using Linkedin more, especially to advertise jobs, it would be a practical useful resource, instead of being mostly useless.

So what does this all mean?

I?m afraid there isn?t one website/resource that you will find your perfect job on.? I haven?t even covered looking in newspapers/magazines, using members only sections of professional associations websites, looking at government (local/central) websites, job fairs, career services?.the list is endless.? Most importantly for job seekers is to be alert to others working in the sector (and in parallel sectors too).? They may not tell you directly about a great job you can apply for immediately, but they may alert you to a company you?d never considered working for, a person you should get in touch with, a website you should be reading.? The possibilities are endless!? The key is to find the resources that work for the sector you want to work in and to tailor your searches to suit your needs.?

Key resources

Here is a list of all the different sites/resources I have mentioned above.? Please leave comments about any more you find useful and indeed and more tactics for finding jobs that you would recommend.

Tips for staying sane: ?Where you can, follow websites via RSS feeds so you can aggregate everything into one easy to manage place, or set up email alerts so the vacancies come to you.

Hacker gains access to Bush family emails, photos

A criminal investigation is under way after a hacker apparently accessed private photos and emails sent between members of the Bush family, including both former presidents, according to reports Friday, Feb. 8, 2013. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa, File)

HOUSTON (AP) ? Turns out even former presidents can fall prey to hackers.

A mysterious email hacker apparently accessed private photos and messages sent between members of the Bush family, including both retired commanders in chief.

The Secret Service is investigating the breach, which appeared to yield little more than a few snapshots and some family discussions. But the incident illustrated how easily hackers can pry into private lives, even those of one of the nation's most prominent and closely guarded political clans.

The Smoking Gun website displayed photos it said came from the hacker, including one that purported to show the elder Bush during his recent stay in a Houston hospital, where the 88-year-old spent almost two months undergoing treatment for complications from a bronchial infection.

The website said the hacker, who went by the online moniker "Guccifer," gained access to the material through Bush family members and friends.

That could have made George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush vulnerable, even if they have the finest security that technology can provide. A friend or relative who clicked on a deceptive link or unwittingly downloaded a suspicious program might accidentally have exposed correspondence involving the former presidents.

"We can't control what our friends do," said Dan Wallach, manager of Rice University's computer security lab and a computer science professor at the Houston school. "If my friends post a photo of me on Facebook, I can untag myself, but I can't delete it. It's not my photo. And that's just a general-purpose problem."

Reached by email, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called the hacking "outrageous."

The rest of the family stayed quiet.

"There's a criminal investigation and, as such, there's nothing else we can say," said Jim McGrath, a spokesman for George H.W. Bush in Houston.

Freddy Ford, a spokesman for George W. Bush, who has a home in Dallas, declined to comment.

Free email accounts from commercial providers are especially vulnerable to hackers who exploit easy-to-use features to reset email passwords. Many passwords can be reset by a hacker who discovers, for example, the birth year of a person's mother, a father's middle name or the name of a favorite pet.

That's what happened to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in 2008, when she was the Republican vice presidential candidate.

"That's the first thing I thought of," said Tyler Moore, an assistant professor of computer science at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. "The key here is when you're famous or a well-known person or celebrity, there's not a lot you can do if you're targeted."

A Tennessee college student named David Kernell was convicted two years later on federal charges.

Last year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's free Microsoft Hotmail account was hacked after The Associated Press revealed that he and some top aides had used private email accounts to conduct state business at times when Romney was governor of Massachusetts.

The anonymous hacker claimed to have guessed the answer to a security question about Romney's favorite pet to gain access to the account and change the password.

Email security is "a constant concern" in presidential politics, Romney senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said Friday.

"What we learned is that no matter how secure you make your system, there is someone out there spending every waking minute trying to subvert it," he said.

Last year, a group of hackers known as the D33D Company published a list of what it said were usernames and passwords for more than 450,000 email accounts, including more than 25,000 AOL accounts. It was not immediately clear whether the Bush family's hacked AOL accounts were among those.

Interestingly, the hacker also revealed that George W. Bush enjoys painting. One photo showed Bush standing at an easel, dabbing at a canvas. Two other images were of paintings that seem to be self-portraits in which the former president is shaving in the shower and soaking in a bathtub. Neither shows any nudity.

On the Smoking Gun site, the word "Guccifer" was plastered across the photos in translucent, neon blue print. The site said "Guccifer" is a self-described veteran hacker who has long been in the government's sights.

Whoever targeted the Bush family was probably not a "high-tech nation-state adversary," Wallach said. "If it were, you wouldn't see their tracks. ... It's probably somebody who thought they could make a quick buck."

Unlike the email scams known as phishing that attempt to fool users into giving up bank account information and passwords, more sophisticated attempts called spear-phishing go after specific individuals or institutions, Wallach said.

According to the FBI, spear-phishing sends legitimate-looking emails that offer plausible explanations for requesting personal data, along with a link. Clicking on the link can download malware that gives the hacker access to things like address lists.

"It's hard to know what kind of miscreant we're dealing with here," Moore said. "It could be someone trying to seek attention to show they can do it. You target a political figure, you're trying to show, 'Nobody is above what we can do.'"

Guccifer could be outside the U.S., making things more complicated for authorities in pursuit, Moore said.

"Of all the famous people to pick on," he added. "I wouldn't pick on someone who has an entire law enforcement branch dedicated to protecting them."

Praise for editorial on mental health care

To the editor:

Kudos to The Daily News for its editorial on the issue of mental health care in America (?Newtown has spurred useful debate on mental health,? Jan. 11).

As the CEO of a multi-program mental health and addiction treatment agency ? with services in Rowley and Amesbury ? I can attest to the fact this is indeed a ?long-neglected health concern.?

In Massachusetts, an estimated 185,000 people have severe mental health issues, and approximately 50 percent of those eligible are on waiting lists for publicly funded services.

There are three primary reasons for this gap between need and access. Two of them are about money.

The mental health parity laws promise equal access to mental health treatment and coverage as for any physical condition. But our daily reality represents anything but parity. Why? Because mental health services are not funded at the same level as physical health issues. As providers, our reimbursement rates barely cover costs. Here?s the third daily reality: In the grocery line, we commiserate about our winter snifflers, but we hesitate to reach out for support around our mental wellbeing. In other words, we fear the conversation and we stigmatize our neighbors with mental illness.

Here?s hoping that 2013 will be the year when real mental health parity become a reality in Massachusetts and America.

'Nikita' Star Maggie Q On What's Ahead In Season 3 And Her New PETA Campaign

When she's not saving the country as a kick-ass spy on The CW's "Nikita" (Fridays at 8 p.m. EST) Maggie Q supporting many charities that promote conservation, healthy living and the protection of animals. The actress has once again partnered with PETA for a campaign that encourages people to be aware of the impact their diets can have on the environment.

The Huffington Post spoke to Q about the campaign, how people can make the switch to vegetarianism and what's coming up for her titular character on "Nikita" -- both personally and professionally -- as Season 3 progresses.

You and Shane [West] have been doing such intense, emotional work on "Nikita" this season. How is their relationship going to evolve as Michael continues to struggle with the loss of his hand?
It?s so funny because we like to call them "adult problems" that we create for the two of them. So it?s never like ?Someone cheated on someone,? or stupid stuff that normally happens on TV. In their world, little things like that don?t happen; in their world, these things happen. Their lives are heightened so their problems are going to be heightened as well.

?Can their love survive?? [is] what people say when it comes to relationships. But sometimes it?s like, "Yes, can their love survive, but can their will as people, can they survive what their circumstances are?" As people, if they can't survive, how are they even going to be in a relationship? I think the way that they are as individuals is going to affect their relationship, which is what?s happening to Michael right now.

We've seen that Michael is pulling away from Nikita and internalizing all of his feelings about that loss right now, but how is Nikita feeling about all of it? She's been trying to get through to him, but right now it's like she's hitting a wall.
She?s really devastated, very broken inside. What do you do when you turn to someone you love and you want to help them, and they won't let you? Last we saw them, there was a little bit of -? he doesn't blame her, but the truth is that ... she kind of did this to him. Obviously the alternative was not a choice. But we don?t know how he?s going to deal with his resentment ... I think this is going to be a test of his character and whether his character can take it or not. I think for her, it?s just this complete and utter feeling of uselessness. There are all these things that she does in her world that work for her. Then in her own personal world, she can't do anything with her relationship. There?s no fix for it. In the second season, [Michael having a child with another woman] was not something you could solve. It wasn?t like, ?Can you make that go away?? It doesn't happen. Adult problems. [Laughs.]

At the end of last week's episode, Birkhoff [Aaron Stanford] gave Nikita a little ray of hope that, even if there's not a fix for Michael's hand, there could be an improvement. I'd imagine she's very focused on tracking down Heidecker and doing whatever she can to make Michael's life a little bit easier.
Yeah, she wants to help him without him knowing ?- not because he couldn?t handle the news, but because the circumstances are such that she actually doesn't get to tell him the news because something kind of surprising happens to him. So she keeps it to herself for two reasons: for that reason, and the other reason is that she?s a little bit afraid of having a lead on something that?s promising and then it not turning out to be what it could be -- getting someone?s hopes up for no reason.

But I think that her biggest fear is that he?s going to handle it on his own and gain all his strength on his own and not need her, or not include her in the process. Relationships ?- the whole reason we become who we become together is because we spend time together, and there?s a bond that?s grown through sharing [those experiences]. Without that, your bond becomes weaker. Now that?s sort of what?s happening. He?s decided that he?s going to internalize everything and not include her. That?s going to cause a weakness in their bond.

Alex [Lyndsy Fonseca] and Nikita's relationship has always been an integral part of the show, but since Alex's relapse with drugs, the two haven't had much opportunity to talk recently, what with everything going on with Michael's hand and Amanda's [Melinda Clarke] vendetta against the team. Can you talk a little bit about their dynamic in the episodes coming up?
I think her bigger demon and the thing that more concerns her is she wants to be in there and she wants to know what?s going on. She wants to be fighting. She wants to be part of everything. That?s going to come to a head for her, not just because of the relapse, but also because of the fact that if you?re an unstable agent, you can't be out in the field. That?s going to be a real struggle, and it may cause her problems to worsen.

Speaking of Amanda, can you preview anything about what her latest nefarious scheme might be?
Put it this way: You won't expect what it is that she?s done or going to do with these people. You would think in watching the show or in episodes past that she?s going to go after them and try to hurt them. But she?s not doing any of those things, actually. She?s going to do stuff we?ve never seen, and things that are a lot worse, that really will rock the foundations in a way that may not be able to be saved.

Owen [Devon Sawa] is now Nikita's partner in the field, and he obviously cares about her as a friend, whether or not there's also a romantic element to it. Can you say anything about how their relationship develops as the season goes on?
I think one of the interesting things to play with when it comes to people who keep turning away and shutting you out ... eventually you?re like, ?What do you do?? The reason I really like Nikita and Owen?s relationship and the reason why I like the dynamics that we built in the show is kind of about the adult problems. We don?t like cheesy problems; we don?t like soap opera problems; we don?t like weak problems. It cheapens the characters and the things that they've built. Nikita and Owen truly do ?- before anything else -? have a friendship. They care about each other. They were on the road together when Nikita was still on her own and still rogue. There was a test at that time for Nikita and Owen, and if that?s what she felt like doing, it would've happened.

What I really love about her is that you?re always very clear about how she feels and what her intentions are. As a character, she?s incredibly loyal to a fault. I think that had Owen had the chance to [be more than friends], I?m sure he?d love that because he cares in that way. But to scare an audience is one thing -- I like that, but I think if she were the kind of person where, at the drop of a hat, she's like, ?You?re ignoring me, so I?m going to find someone else" ... No. That?s not who she is. I do like ... Owen defending her a lot and [him being] upset at the way Michael?s treating her. I think if anything is going to take her away from Michael in time, it would have to be something that?s rooted in a lot of care and friendship. It would be a long time coming, I think, before she could just jump the gun and move away from him.

Right -- she knows what Michael's going through and how hard it must be for him, so for her to just throw that relationship away while he's struggling would kind of be character assassination; it wouldn't be sympathetic behavior for the audience.
Right, there?s no way she?s going to say, ?You have to let me in, and I don?t understand why you?re not.? She?s more saying, ?I know you?re not, and it?s not fair to me. Please think about how we could do this together. I want to support you.? Nikita and Owen obviously work together more, and their friendship is going to become even deeper. Then, as we get further into the season, there?s some big, really nice character development for Owen. We?re going to see something about Owen?s past -? who knows if anybody could ever be with Owen, after we find out who Owen is and what he's done?

How much is the Presidential threat against Division going to play into the second half of the season?
It?s definitely going get bigger and it?s going to get a lot more scary. The [people] at the top, because of risk, could wipe the place out. On the president?s side ... people around her are manipulating her into a place where they can get what they want done, their agenda done. And that is against Division as well. It?s very complicated.

A lot of the remaining Division agents seem suspicious about Ryan [Noah Bean] and Nikita's promises that they'll actually receive a pardon once they've captured the Dirty 30. Is dissent among the ranks going to be an ongoing issue?
Absolutely. It?s actually going to be part of the culmination of those two things, to be honest. Once we come towards Episode 17 and on, it?s really going to be about what people have, will, or will no longer accept about what they've been promised.

Is there anything you can reveal about what you're filming this week?
We?re doing a really big stunt today, which is really fun. This episode that we?re doing right now is a game-changer episode. In this one, Episode 16, I would say that not only is it a game-changer, and not only is it an audience shocker, but I would say it?s one of the best episodes that we have done this season.

nikita maggie q peta

Let's talk about your latest PETA campaign. The image tagline is ?Fight climate change with diet change.? Can you talk about how going vegetarian can positively impact the environment?
I like PETA as a group for many reasons, but one of the reasons that I admire them is that they say and do the things that other groups won't do. People criticize them. To be fair to them, you have to get people talking about certain issues -- the only way to do that is to get out there in a bigger way. We make people famous for putting out sex tapes, but someone gets flour thrown on them, it?s like, ?How could you! You?re a horrible group!? It?s a little stupid, getting mad at a group like PETA, yet people do have a lot of judgment about [them], because they get out there and say the things that nobody wants to hear, which I admire a lot.

[For this campaign], I said, "I don?t want to tell people how they?re living is wrong." If you give people the facts, then you allow them their own informed choice. I said, "I want an image that is profound. Then I want a statement that is a call for action," or to just draw the line from one point to the other that people haven?t tracked yet. [The first statement they sent] said, ?Save the planet,? and I?m really bored of "save the planet." The truth is, I don?t know what's going to happen to the planet. I, Maggie, personally cannot tell you that you?re going to save the planet. But what I do know is that we can draw a line to an issue that can conserve what we already have and what?s left in a way that we can actually breathe the air, drink the water, actually grow things in soil -- that matters in a real, practical way.

I said, "I want something that will allow people to have a thought that maybe they haven?t researched or thought about before." There are a lot of environmental documentaries out there. I think they?re invaluable, but they have not explored this issue ... It?s very disappointing because we don?t want to upset big, corporate, multinational America. We don?t want to upset the dairy industry; we don?t want to upset the meat industry; we don?t want to upset Tyson chicken. We don?t want to upset those people because there?s too much money going into the lobby to tell people that these things are good for them, and these things don?t harm the environment. But the truth is, when you?re raising over 60 billion animals a year for food, those animals have to be sheltered and fed and watered. Some of them are 20, 40, 50 times the size of a human being. Their waste has to go somewhere. So ... every year we?re raising and killing animals ?- where do we think all those resources are coming from? There are 6.5 billion of us now. Think about 60 billion other mouths to feed, other bodies that wastes are flowing out of, that need water and shelter. Once they?re killed, they need refrigeration and transporting.

There?s no way to look at the meat industry today and say, ?There?s no environmental impact.? Animals grown for food pollute our air, our soil, our water, our streams, our oceans. And these are United Nations statistics; these are not statistics from PETA or animal rights groups. The United Nations four or five years ago put out a study that said the meat industry, meat-eating, growing meat for food is the No. 1 killer of our planet ?- not No. 2 or No. 3: No 1. You know what?s No. 2? Transportation. Everyone thinks that No. 1 is transportation, and goes out and buys a hybrid car. Screw the hybrid cars. Don?t eat hamburgers. If you don?t eat a hamburger, your carbon footprint is so much less than driving a hybrid car, I can't even tell you.

Somewhere from 15 to 25 percent of transportation emissions are from animal transport ?- getting animals to slaughter houses, getting all that meat from California to New York, or from Buenos Aires to Mississippi. All this stuff has to go somewhere. It?s not grown in America ... we?re doing it in third-world countries, buying up all their land, growing our meat there, slaughtering them, and shipping it all back here. These days, there?s too much information available for us to pretend that this is not an issue. So for me, the image, with the world painted on my body ... the literal interpretation is that the future of conservation and what we want to conserve for us or our kids is on us. It literally is on us in reality. Our choices are going to determine the future for our children, our children?s children, and their children. I take that responsibility very seriously.

I am definitely a hippie, but I?m a very modern hippie -- I?m the most informed hippie you will ever meet. I don't just walk around and say, ?I love this town. I love these people.? You know what? A lot of people don?t give a shit about cows or chickens or sheep. But those people that don't love animals, maybe they have a friend or a daughter or three daughters. There?s one issue that?s going to affect them -? environmental, social, animal. There?s every single issue you can think of tied to this industry.

You don?t have to give up everything. Meat used to be a luxury ... something that they had at Christmas or a feast. Now, people eat meat 10 times a day. They eat it literally every single meal. Now we?re also dealing with heart disease and diabetes. Obesity is so chronic and out of control that we go bankrupt to help fix this stuff. There are so many preventative measures that we can do now that are good for our health and our healthcare system and the country that we live in. Some people -- let?s say they don?t have kids, they don?t care about the environment, they don?t care about animals because they don?t have kids, and they don?t see a future. Maybe you care about other people.

The meat industry is one of the No. 1 employers of illegal workers in the United States. Have you ever met anyone who worked in a slaughter house? I don?t know anyone who works in a slaughter house. The reason why we don?t know these people is because these people are not our friends, they?re not our neighbors, they?re not people we know, they?re not people we went to school with. These people are mainly illegal because it?s the worst, most horrifying job on the planet. You?re basically working in a warehouse with no windows because ... if [there were windows on slaughterhouses], as Paul McCartney said, everyone would be vegetarian. No one can see what?s going on, and they have all these problems with animal rights groups getting all this footage of animal cruelty on these farms. So they box them up and they use very little lighting because they want the animals to stay in this subdued state, so that they?re always in the dark. It?s always nighttime. These animals live in filth. They stand in their own feces and their own urine. They don?t move. There?s no exercise. There?s no air or light.

If something lives in that way, how healthy do you think that thing would be? If you and I and your family and my family and 17 other families were in my trailer right now, and this is where we stayed; we never walked out; we never used the bathroom; we ate where we stood, and we never moved, we?d be sick. Imagine us taking that sick animal and chopping it up, and you?re eating it. These animals are so sick, they get up to 17 injections a day of hormones and steroids and antibiotics just to stay alive ... They?re living in these horrible conditions in the dark, no air, no nothing, no movement. And the people who work in these places, this is the highest risk of injury of any job in the United States. They?re operating massive machinery to cut these animals, slaughter them, kill them, transport them in these warehouses in low lighting, no windows. They?re up to their knees in blood and guts and urine and everything else that comes with the job. People?s limbs get cut off, their arms, their heads, their feet, their toes, their fingers.

Do you know what we do to them when they get injured on the job? They?re illegal. No one even knows they?re here. We just toss them back across the border. No one gives a shit. We just throw them back over their border with their injuries, with no compensation. Before that, they got paid pennies anyway because who gives a shit, right?

There?s a magazine called VegNews. Even if you?re not vegetarian and just want to eat healthier, it's the most amazing magazine. I don't know what issue it was in, but it was an interview with workers from places like Tyson chicken factory. These were people that were illegal, who were in the United States and working in the factory. They spoke openly about the conditions and what they do on the job every day. It?s so disgusting. Everybody works 12 to 16 hours a day. They don't get lunch breaks. They don't get bathroom breaks. Once they get there in the morning, the machinery starts. They don?t pause the machinery because the output is too quick ... These people are like ... they?re all pissing on these chickens. They?re shitting in their pants. They don?t get to eat. You don?t understand how bad this is. People get sick. They don?t send them home. They?re vomiting. These are people who are processing food. That?s what?s going on in these factories. People try to go in and get undercover footage, but [the company] is very aware of that fact. They won't let somebody in to show how food gets to the table, it?s too disgusting.

I remember reading about what goes on in the milk industry, and it's just horrifying.
The first thing I always say to people ... cows don?t lactate unless they?re pregnant. We are taking milk from an animal that is reserving it in a special state for its child. But instead of the cow being able to feed its child, the animal is born. It gets ripped away from its mother, and gets thrown into a veal box so that whatever restaurant can have veal sandwiches, and this poor cow can get her milk taken from her until she?s dry. Then when she?s dry, what do they do? They artificially inseminate her and keep getting her pregnant for seven years. Seven years. Being pregnant for nine months is the biggest nightmare ever, I don?t care what anybody tells you. How can we keep an animal pregnant for seven years? How unnatural. Those animals, basically after seven years of lactating, they collapse from exhaustion. They?re the sickest animals alive. Those are the animals that we slaughter and cut up. That?s ground beef. Those animals are so sick you can't actually get a healthy cut of beef to sell whole, that?s the very low quality meat you see in hamburger meat.

There?s a lovely book by a guy called Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, who writes all these books on the emotional lives of animals ... He wrote this book called, ?The Pig Who Thanked the Moon.? It was him basically traveling around the world, visiting all these farms, and asking all these farmers what they really felt about what they?re doing to these animals ... He kept asking these farmers, ?When you take that baby from its mother, is that natural?? They're like, ?Oh, well it?s just animals ... they?re emotionless, they?re machines, they're here to produce milk.? Every single one of these farmers denied that there was any emotion [in the animals] until this one guy from England ... said, ?I don?t know if this counts.? Jeffrey goes, ?Just tell me. I?ll tell you if it counts.? The farmer said, ?Maybe the screaming.? He said, ?It used to be, when the mother cows had their calves, we would at least allow them to nurse for two weeks and be with their baby for two weeks, and then we took the baby away. Now, the demand for veal?s gone up, and the demand for dairy is so high that we have to rip the babies away right away.?

And [Jeffrey] was like, ?What happens when you do that?? [The farmer] said, ?The female cow will make a noise that?s akin to a human screaming. You?ve never heard a cow make this sound because it only happens during this time,? when you're doing this horrible thing of taking this child away from his mother. He said, ?How long does the screaming go on?? The guy says, ?It goes on until the cow loses its voice indefinitely.? He said that after that period of screaming, the mother never makes another sound for the rest of her life. Then, [Jeffrey] goes back and asks all these other farmers, ?Have you ever seen this happen? This guy in England told me this happens.? Every single one said, ?Oh, yeah. That happens.?

I remember I was on a plane, and I already didn?t [drink milk]. But the fact that it still goes on, I was bawling my eyes out. The thought of being a living, sentient being and carrying a child in your body and having someone come and rip it away from you and never seeing it again -? I don?t care what you say, that?s not natural.

Do you have any tips for anyone who wants to make the switch to vegetarianism or becoming vegan?
I think the first step is to have a really firm foundation in your information. Really be studied enough so you're armed with knowledge. You can't care unless the information matters to you. There?s no issue tied to this industry that someone?s not going to care about. There's going to be something that affects them. And build it comprehensively and look at something and say, ?I understand all these issues, I just don?t want to be a part of that.? I think that?s the first thing that you have to do. There?s a book that I love called ?Food Matters.? Mark Bittman wrote it. It?s a really easy read. The minute you open the book, he hits you with it: "If you're doing this, this is what you?re doing to the planet." It?s kind of amazing. He makes the reader accountable from the get-go, which I like. He?s not too judgmental. He?s saying, ?Here are the facts.? The first step for me was having strong convictions and being well-informed.

And the second thing practically is just that it?s easier now than it?s ever been to eat better. You can eat healthier in a conscious way. There?s a lovely website called Happy Cow, and if you go to Happy Cow and you type in the city you?re in, it lists every single thing you need to know about that city -? where there?s a vegetarian restaurant, where there are places that don't serve this or that. It?s fantastic. Even grocery stores now, the amount of options they have ... And I don?t eat mock meats. I don?t eat tofu ... I eat grains, vegetables, fruits. I think what I?ve really enjoyed about being vegetarian, forgetting all the other issues that matter to me, I have no cholesterol problem. My cholesterol is perfect. My blood pressure is perfect. I think it?s not just about the industry; I think because of the world we live in now, we now need to take a closer look at our health, and we are taking a closer look at our heath. Then we?re taking a closer look at what we put into our bodies.
