HIV pioneers unite to stamp out the virus for good

Could this be the endgame for HIV? Pioneers of HIV research last week announced a united goal: to stamp out the virus forever.

"Finding a cure is going to be one of multiple strategies to end the epidemic," says Sharon Lewin of the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, who is one of the 34 founders of the global scientific strategy called "Towards an HIV Cure". The announcement came ahead of the 21st International AIDS Conference in Washington DC this week.

HIV can be suppressed using antiretroviral drugs but not cured, because the drugs only kill cells in which the virus is multiplying. HIV can lay low by inserting dormant copies of itself into the DNA of healthy cells. Lewin and others are researching new approaches to flush out HIV. She is managing a trial exploring a promising avenue ? giving people a cancer drug called vorinostat that "wakes up the virus" so it can be destroyed with antiretroviral drugs.

Other avenues include loading immune cells with genes to sabotage a white-blood-cell's surface protein, CCR5, which HIV uses to enter cells. A treatment aimed at biochemically chipping the virus out of infected people's DNA is also in development.

Mists of Pandaria: Wild pets will not be tradeable

Cory Stockton, aka Mumper, has announced that pets caught in the wild will no longer be tradable and that this will be the case when Mists of Pandaria launches. We just finished a pass making all pets that are caught via pet battles in the world non-tradeable. This means these pets cannot be put in cages for trading or posting on the AH. We felt that the option to buy these pets on the AH would take away from the exploration/collection gameplay of the system.

This could always change in a future patch, but this is how it will go out with MoP. You should see the change in our next build.

In pet battles, tradable pets can be sold on the AH. Training and caging wild pets looked to be a lucrative endeavor, since the catchable pets spawn in various qualities such as poor and rare. Many buyers would have been happy to shell out their gold for a high-quality pet that they didn't have to grind for.

As of right now on the beta, pet spawning locations tend to be heavily camped. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in cross-realm zones.

Apple wins EU-wide injunction against Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

Word around the mulberry bush is that Apple has just won itself a Europe-wide injunction against the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, in case anyone still wanted to buy that tablet now that the Nexus 7 is out. The decision was taken in-between beer courses at the appeals court in Dusseldorf, but it didn't all go Apple's way -- Cupertino's request to have the re-designed Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned too was rejected, having already been turned down at preliminary hearing back in February.

The Tab 7.7 apparently infringes Apple patents that date from 2004 and, such is the power of one little German town, cannot technically be sold anywhere in the EU. In contrast, the failed claim against the 10-inch slate hinged on a "generic design patent," which a British judge has also vehemently dismissed. Glossing over the 7.7 decision, Samsung says it "welcomes the court's ruling" with regard to the 10.1N and accuses Apple of using "legal claims" to restrict "design innovation and progress in the industry."
